Rangers coaching search: Mark Messier interviews for position

The New York Rangers have interviewed Mark Messier for their head coaching vacancy.

Mark Messier has interviewed to become the next head coach of the New York Rangers, according to Dan Rosen of NHL.com. Rosen tweeted that Messier would not go into the specifics of the interview, but confirmed that it has already taken place.

Messier is one of several candidates believed to be in the running for the vacant position.

It's known that former Vancouver Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault interviewed for the job earlier this week. The Rangers have reportedly also requested permission to speak with former Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff and Los Angeles Kings assistant coach John Stevens, though Vigneault is largely assumed to be the favorite.

Reports have indicated that Messier is a legitimate candidate for the role, however -- despite his lack of coaching experience at the professional level. A report surfaced on Thursday stating that Messier would likely be joined by former teammate Brian Leetch as an assistant on his staff in the event that he was offered the position.

General manager Glen Sather has previously stated that he hopes to have a new coach in place prior to June 30's NHL Draft.
