Niklas Backstrom agrees to contract extension with Wild

USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Wild and Niklas Backstrom have come to terms on a contract extension.

The Minnesota Wild have come to terms on a contract extension with goaltender Niklas Backstrom, the team announced on Monday afternoon.

Backstrom has agreed to a three-year contract extension, per the club's release and will carry a $3.42 million annual average value against the cap, according to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The 35-year-old goaltender played out the final year of a four-year, $24 million contract in 2013 that carried an annual average value of $6 million against the salary cap. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

This announcement comes a few hours after assistant general manager Brent Flahr told Russo that the two sides had been engaging in progressive negotiations. Flahr believed that an extension was close and could be finalized in the near future.

Both parties previously expressed interest in continuing their working relationship. Backstrom even insinuated that he would be open to a team-friendly deal in order to accomplish such a goal.

Backstrom compiled a 24-15-3 record in 2013 with a 2.48 goals-against average, a .909 save percentage and posted two shutouts.
