NHL free agency 2013: Blues sign Maxim Lapierre to two-year deal

USA TODAY Sports

The Blues added to their center corps. with Max Lapierre.

The St. Louis Blues signed Maxim Lapierre to a two-year, $2.2 million deal. The center joins St. Louis from the Vancouver Canucks, where he spent the last part of the 2013 season after being traded from the Dallas Stars.

The Blues made depth as much a priority as top end talent and Lapierre helps with that. Lapierre should be able to slot in on the fourth line with the Blues and contribute on the penalty kill. The question will be whether he can control his agression and stay out of the penalty box, having accumulated 45 PIM last year.

Lapierre isn't the great offensive center that the Blues wanted, having scored four goals and added six assists in 48 games last season, but he is a physical player and with St. Louis having also signed Derek Roy, they have taken care of the offensive center problem. With that taken care of, Lapierre addresses the depth and the Blues have strength down the center.
