Teemu Selanne will have place with Ducks next season, says GM

Harry How

The Anaheim Ducks have a spot for Teemu Selanne if he decides to return for the 2013-14 season.

It's no secret that the career of respected forward Teemu Selanne is coming to a close. The 43-year-old has been an institution to the game since making his debut in 1992 and will likely have the highlights of his career immortalized in Toronto sometime in the near future.

How near that future is depends solely upon when Selanne decides to untie his skates for the final time. Currently an unrestricted free agent, Selanne is believed to be contemplating whether he will return to the NHL for another season. Selanne has played the last three seasons under one-year contracts, which is indicative of how fluid the continuation of his career is.

Selanne has spent the majority of his playing days with the Anaheim Ducks franchise. In the event that he decides to return for 2013-14, he will continue to have a place on the team according to general manager Bob Murray. Murray's only request is that Selanne be 100 percent certain that he wants to play, via Adam Kimmelman's twitter feed:

"I want Teemu to play if he's 100-percent sure he wants to play. If he's sure he wants it bad, then we'll make it work, whatever I have to do.The only answer I need is he's 100% sure he wants to play. That's the only answer I need. ... I don't care when he tells me. We'll find a way. We've got lots of cap space, we have enough contracts."

Selanne's last three contracts have carried annual average values of $4.5 million (2010-11, 2012-13) and $4 million (2011-12). Anaheim has 47 contracts on their books and $4.374 million in cap space, according to CapGeek.com.

Selanne has yet to comment on his plans for next year.
