Nicklas Lidstrom to have number retired against Avalanche

Claus Andersen

The Detroit Red Wings have wisely chosen to retire Nicklas Lidstrom's number prior to a game against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Detroit Red Wings were planning on retiring the jersey number of former-captain Nicklas Lidstrom during the 2012-13 regular season. And then the lockout happened. Since the schedule wasn't finalized until January, the team wisely decided to postpone the ceremony until the 2013-14 campaign.

On Thursday afternoon, they formalized the occasion.

The Red Wings will honor Lidstrom on March 6 when the Colorado Avalanche come to town. This is a nice touch considering the rivalry they had in the mid- to late-90s. No disrespect to the Columbus Blue Jackets (the original opponent for the 2012-13 retirement ceremony), but it will be a bit more poetic to have Colorado in the building when the highlight video harkens back to those classic moments against the Avalanche.

Lidstrom was named the Red Wings' captain in 2006 and was the first European born captain to win the Stanley Cup. Over the course of 1,564 career games, Lidstrom recorded 264 goals and 878 assists for a total of 1,142 points. He ended his career with four Stanley Cup championships and seven Norris Trophies as the league's best defenseman.

He will join the likes of Terry Sawchuk, Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Sid Abel and Steve Yzerman as players who have had their number retired by Detroit.
