Jay Bouwmeester contract: Blues re-sign defenseman for 5 years

USA TODAY Sports

The Blues dig deep into their pockets to lock up one of the better defensemen on their roster.

The St. Louis Blues and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester have agreed to a five-year extension worth $27 million, the team announced on Thursday.

Bouwmeester was acquired mid-season by the Blues in a deal with the Calgary Flames. He had one year remaining on his current deal, placing him under team control until the end of the 2018-19 season. The 29-year-old veteran scored a goal and recorded six assists in 14 regular season games with St. Louis. He had just one point in the Blues' six-game series with the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the playoffs.

While the price paid for Bouwmeester may seem steep, the Blues have shown a willingness to commit to spending big on defensemen. St. Louis has been busy this offseason, inking fellow defensemen Kevin Shattenkirk to a four-year deal and right winger Chris Stewart to a two-year deal.
