Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli agrees to 4-year contract extension

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli will be spending several more years in Boston after agreeing to an extension.

The Boston Bruins have come to terms on a four-year contract extension with manager Peter Chiarelli, the team announced Thursday afternoon. Chiarelli has one year remaining on his current deal, which means the contract will conclude following the 2017-18 season.

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. This announcement comes a few hours after Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston reported that a contract extension was near completion.

Chiarelli has acted as manager since May of 2006 and has constructed six playoff-qualifying teams, which culminated in a Stanley Cup championship in 2011. Over the course of the last three years, the Bruins have made two Stanley Cup appearances and have been lauded as one of the NHL's most consistent franchises. That is largely credited to the work of Chiarelli and his staff.

In addition to being retained as manager, Chiarelli will continue serving as one of the team's Alternate Governors on the NHL's Board of Governors.
