The United States Hockey League announced that it has awarded an expansion franchise to the Madison, Wisconsin market.

The NHL isn't the only professionally hockey league with its sights set on expansion.

The United States Hockey League has awarded membership to a club in the Madison, Wisconsin market, the league announced on Monday afternoon. The club will be owned and operated by Madtown Hockey, LLC and will begin operation during the 2014-15 regular season. Madtown Hockey's ownership group consists of Tom Garrity, Saul Treiman, Charles Bidwell III, Jeffrey Krol, Brian Schoenborn and Greg Scott.

The club's admission into the USHL was made possible by a vote of the league's 16-member Board of Directors. The board hosted the new ownership group at the league's annual meeting last month. This year's gathering took place in Kohler, Wisconsin and spent time reviewing the logistics of a team's operation in Madison.

The club is planning to host its home games at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center, pending final lease approval by the Dane County Board of Supervisors. As of this time, ownership has yet to decide on a nickname and will be holding a naming contest.

Madison previously had a team in the USHL from 1984-95. The club originally entered the league as the Madison Capitols, before being rebranded as the Wisconsin Capitols in 1991.
