Winter Classic 2014: Nicklas Lidstrom to play in alumni game

Nicklas Lidstrom will be returning to play for the Detroit Red Wings in the 2014 Winter Classic...alumni game.

The Detroit Red Wings announced that former captain Nicklas Lidstrom will be participating in the Alumni Showdown as part of the Hockeytown Winter Festival associated with the 2014 Winter Classic.

It was expected that Lidstrom would participate in the event but had not confirmed his participation until Friday morning. As is the case with recent incarnations of the Winter Classic, the two teams participating in the event field a team of alumni players that participate in an alumni game prior to the actual contest.

Red Wings manager Ken Holland stated in August that Lidstrom expressed interest in playing in the game. In addition, the manager hoped to lure back Steve Yzerman who, as of this writing, has said that he won't be playing in any alumni games.
