World Junior hockey: Pittsburgh Penguins interested in hosting 2018 tournament

Justin K. Aller

The Pittsburgh Penguins are interested in hosting the World Junior Championship.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are interested in hosting the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Junior Championship, according to Penguins CEO David Morehouse. The news was first reported by Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Morehouse states that the tournament coming to Pittsburgh is predicated more on logistics than anything else:

"I don't think it's a rough road at all. It's just a matter of putting together an application."

The World Junior Championship is scheduled to take place in the United States in 2018 and, based upon Morehouse's comments, it sounds as though Pittsburgh will be a candidate to host the event. Morehouse did not confirm when the organization would apply, but he did add that Western Pennsylvania was close enough in proximity to rinks in Erie, Johnstown and Wheeling to properly host the tournament.

Consol Energy Center hosted the USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game on Thursday, which showcased 40 of the best United States-born prospects for the 2014 NHL Draft. That arena would act as the primary venue if Pittsburgh was awarded the Under-20 World Championship.
