Tim Gleason injury: Hurricanes defenseman out with concussion

Elsa

The Carolina Hurricanes announced that Tim Gleason will miss time due to a concussion.

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason sustained a concussion, head coach Kirk Mueller announced on Monday afternoon.

Gleason sustained the concussion in the team's exhibition game against the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 21. The 30-year-old defenseman participated in a fight with Montreal defenseman Jarred Tinordi in the first period. Gleason played out the remainder of the period, but would not return after the first intermission.

No time-table was released regarding the injury, as Mueller stated that the club will follow protocol and return Gleason to the lineup when he is ready. Team defense was already a concern for the Hurricanes, especially with the injury to Joni Pitkanen. While the team was able to add Andrej Sekera, Mike Komisarek and Ron Hainsey this offseason, another loss on the backend is a frustrating development.

In addition, the Hurricanes announced Tuumo Ruutu was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Sept. 21 due to a lower-body injury. He will be eligible to return at any point.
