2014 Olympics: USA Hockey to announce roster at Winter Classic

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

USA Hockey will reveal the 2014 Olympic team during the Winter Classic.

A primary storyline in the 2013-14 NHL regular season will be the selection process for the 2014 Winter Olympics, which will take place in Sochi, Russia. The majority of national teams have stated that performance in the opening months of the NHL campaign will ultimately decide who makes the cut.

For those hoping to represent the United States, a deadline has been set for the evaluation period, as USA Hockey announced that its roster will be revealed during the Winter Classic on Jan. 1.

Manager David Poile stated on Monday that over half the roster from the 2010 Olympics could makeup the 2014 Olympic roster. If that turns out to be the case, that means 12-13 spaces could be up for grabs. Teams are permitted to carry two more players at this year's games (25 in total), as rosters were limited to 23 players in Vancouver.

Team USA will be shaped by a management team led by Poile that includes Dale Tallon, Dean Lombardi, Don Waddell, Jim Johannson and Paul Holmgren. Head coach Dan Bylsma and his staff of Peter Laviolette, Todd Richards and Tony Granato.
