Winter Classic 2014 score update: Maple Leafs tie it late at 1-1

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

It looked like the Red Wings were going to run away with this one, but the Leafs amped up the pressure and we've got a tie game after 40 minutes.

The second period began like the first ended, with the Red Wings taking it to the Maple Leafs in waves, while most of the Leafs' roster has struggled to generate much of anything.

One player who isn't struggling to shoot the puck though, is Leafs superstar Phil Kessel, who has recorded 8 shots through 40 minutes, a whopping 44.4% of Toronto's total shots.

The one time the Leafs did manage to get a great scoring opportunity, Jimmy Howard came up with an amazing save on Nazem KadriShortly after, Detroit was stuffed on an open net chance by a perfect stick block by Carl Gunnarsson to keep the game knotted at zero, but eventually the Wings would break through.

The goal came on a two-on-one rush by Henrik Zetterberg and Daniel Alfredsson, with Zetterberg firing a pass off of Alfredsson's skate and into the net behind Jonathan Bernier.

After the goal, Detroit missed several high quality chances to run away with the game, with Bernier playing a large part in keeping it within one. After seeing their goaltender save their bacon, the Leafs began to push the play in the other direction, drawing a penalty from Jakub Kindl, only to see Howard pull out even greater heroics to preserve the lead.

Toronto's pressure would pay off though, with James van Riemsdyk getting a second whack at a rebound off of a Phil Kessel shot that bounced up in the air, baseball swinging the puck through Howard.

The action didn't stop until the final whistle, with Zetterberg setting up Alfredsson for a chance as the horn blew to end the period. We've got a game.

During the second intermission, US women's hockey roster for the upcoming Olympics was announced.
