Winter Classic 2014: James van Riemsdyk bats one in

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

James van Riemsdyk used a baseball swing to score a goal in the hockey game being played at the football stadium.

For most of the first two periods it seemed as if the Winter Classic was destined to be scoreless until a shootout.

Late in the second period, the two teams finally found a way to break through the snow and find the back of the net. After Daniel Alfredsson gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead with his skate, Toronto's James van Riemsdyk scored the equalizer when he batted the puck out of mid-air past Jimmy Howard.
