Coach Mike Babcock announced on Tuesday that his starting goalie is going to stay off the ice for about a week after re-injurying his left knee during their 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Monday night. Howard exited the game midway through the second period and did not return after stopping 22 of the 25 shots he faced.
The good news for Detroit: Howard doesn't think the injury is as serious as it was when he missed most of December.
#RedWings Jimmy Howard said he has fluid in left knee, but not as serious as when he first hurt it in December. Out at least a week for now— Helene St. James (@HeleneStJames) January 21, 2014
Howard, who was also named to the U.S. Olympic team, has appeared in 29 games this season and has a .916 save percentage to go with a 9-12-8 record. He had been playing some of his best hockey of the season after returning to the lineup and had .943 save percentage in the month of January.
Jonas Gustavsson will start in his absence.
