NHL trade rumors: Rangers gauging trade interest in Ryan Callahan

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Could the New York Rangers trade captain Ryan Callahan before the trade deadline?

Every year around trade deadline time a surprising name works its way into the rumor mill.

This year it seems as if it's going to be New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan.

According to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun, contract talks have not been going well between the team and Callahan and general manager Glen Sather is making calls around the league to gauge interest in the forward. Callahan, 28, is eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer if a new deal is not reached.

On Tuesday's Insider Trading, TSN's Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie echoed a similar report that Sather has both Callahan and defenseman Dan Girardi (also a free agent after the season)  out there in the event that new deals can't be reached before the trade deadline. Callahan is reportedly looking for a seven-year contract in the neighborhood of $6 million per season, while Girardi could settle for a six-year deal. According to McKenzie, the Rangers would prefer a five-year contract.

McKenzie added that even though the Rangers are in a playoff spot they understand they're not a Stanley Cup contender and that they are not prepared to let them walk away in the summer for nothing.

If the Rangers swing a deal -- or two -- it wouldn't be the first time they made a blockbuster trade at the deadline when they're still in the playoff race. At last year's deadline the team sent Marian Gaborik to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a deal that sent Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett, and John Moore to New York.

In 37 games this season Callahan has nine goals to go with 11 assists.
