Winter Olympics hockey 2014: Canadian women break through against Finland

Canada fought hard to earn a win against Noora Raty and Finland on Monday.

SB Nation 2014 Olympics Preview

It took almost a full hour of hard-fought hockey, but the Canadian women's ice hockey team eventually prevailed in a 3-0 group stage win over Finland.

With the win, Finland is now winless in 21 games all-time against Canada. For awhile, it looked like they would finally break the streak.

Canada dominated possession early on, but failed to generate any real scoring chances against a pesky Finnish squad. What few real scoring chances they had were stopped by Finland goaltender Noora Raty, who pitched a shutout through two periods despite Canada outshooting Finland 27-10.

Raty finished the game with 39 saves on 42 shots.

Canada finally broke through midway through the third period. With Finland defenseman Emma Terho in the box for body-checking, Meghan Agosta-Marciano scored a power-play goal from the slot to give Canada a 1-0 lead. Jayna Hefford made it 2-0 minutes later and Rebecca Johnston gave Canada a three-goal lead with two minutes remaining to effectively end Finland's upset hopes.

Finland gets one more chance at an Olympic win on Wednesday against Switzerland. Canada will rest up before their big game against the United States later that afternoon.
