Calder Trophy 2014: Nathan MacKinnon named NHL's top rookie by landslide

Doug Pensinger

Nathan MacKinnon is in a class of his own.

Nathan MacKinnon deserved the Calder Trophy, and the 2014 NHL Awards show gave him sweet justice. The Colorado Avalanche rookie scored 10 points in seven playoff games, and that part wasn't even considered in the voting.

The 18-year-old absolutely dominated the voting, crushing Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson of the Tampa Bay Lightning with 130 of the 137 first-place votes. Inexplicably, Torey Krug of the Boston Bruins and Jacob Trouba of the Winnipeg Jets got first-place votes. No disrespect to those guys, but ... really?

MacKinnon topped all first-year players in points (63), goals (24-tied), assists (39), power-play goals (8), game-winning goals (5-tied) and shots (241).

Here's the full vote, as made by members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association:

  • 2. Ondrej Palat, TB 791 (5-78-29-15-5)
