Kempe, 17, has spent the last two years as a member of the Modo organization of the Swedish Hockey League (formerly known as Elitserien) and made his debut with the major club during the 2013-14 season. Kempe registered 11 points (five goals and six assists) in 45 regular season games with Modo and dressed for two playoff games, recording an assist. The left-handed shooting forward spent time at both center and left wing.
Kempe was selected with the No. 107 overall pick in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft by the Barrie Colts, but opted to continue his career in Sweden.
Listed at 6'1, 187 pounds, Kempe is described by the ISS as a versatile centerman with good drive on the puck. Kempe finished the year ranked as the No. 22 prospect in this year's draft class, according to the ISS. He is praised as a total package with and without the puck:
