Penguins sign Christian Ehrhoff to 1-year contract

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

The Penguins did not have to wait long to find a replacement for Matt Niskanen.

The Pittsburgh Penguins promised to be aggressive in free agency, and they wasted little time making a splash agreeing to terms with defenseman Christian Ehrhoff on a one-year, $4 million contract according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

The deal comes less than a week after the Sabres used their last remaining compliance buyout on Ehrhoff after signing him to a 10-year contract three years ago.

The Penguins' lack of depth at forward has been a major focal point over the past year, and especially after the trade of James Neal to Nashville, but with Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik leaving in free agency and Rob Scuderi turning into a boat anchor almost over night, they had some holes to fill on the blue line as well.

Ehrhoff gives them another puck-moving defenseman -- and a very good one -- to add to their collection. The only question that remains now is whether or not there is another move to shake up their defense. Cap space is limited for the Penguins and with Ehrhoff taking up $4 million it stands to reason that another move could be coming, perhaps involving veteran Paul Martin who is entering the final year of his contract and counts $5 million against the cap.

The only other option would be finding a way to dump the remaining years of Scuderi's contract on somebody else.
