Carolina Hurricanes rookie Noah Hanifin was guilty of a very rookie mistake in Sunday afternoon's game against the Los Angeles Kings. Players outside of the netminder are not allowed to cover up the puck in the goal crease, and Hanifin found himself guilty of trying to close a hand over the puck in a scrum that lead to a penalty shot and goal from Dustin Brown.
The first angle gives the best look at Hanifin's mistake, who corralled the puck with his glove under him as it sat in the blue paint. Goaltender Cam Ward probably would have been able to grab it with his glove had Hanifin not interfered, and it might have been the netminder himself that actually snagged the puck, according to the second replay.
Brown got the penalty shot for the Kings and pulled Ward far enough out of the crease to finish his few moves of trickery. Safe to say, Hanifin wasn't pleased with his mistake after the goal, which gave the Kings life in a game where they were originally down by three goals.
