The Montreal Canadiens were pushing hard to tie up their game with the Anaheim Ducks late on Tuesday. Andrew Shaw pushed a little too hard.
Montreal had pulled within a goal of the Ducks in the final minutes of regulation when Shaw was penalized for hooking Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen in the offensive zone.
He initially disagreed with the call, but it wasn’t until he saw a replay from the penalty box that he truly had a meltdown.
Upon seeing that, the referees gave Shaw a 10-minute misconduct and escorted him to the locker room upon the ejection. Anaheim took a penalty soon after, but time expired before the Canadiens could tie the game.
Whether anything else comes of this is up in the air, but it’s worth noting that this is not the first time Shaw’s angry verbosity has gotten him in trouble. Last spring, Shaw had to apologize and was suspended for using a gay slur against a player during the playoffs. Shaw was traded to the Canadiens this summer and signed a six-year, $23 million deal before getting suspended in the preseason.
