Sports Network | October 22, 2009
Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Marc-Andre Bergeron registered a goal and an assist, as the Montreal Canadiens routed the New York Islanders, 5-1, at Bell Centre.
Scott Gomez, Max Pacioretty, Maxim Lapierre and Mike Cammalleri also tallied for Montreal, which has won two straight after losing the previous five. It also marked the Habs first win in regulation in the last 13 contests dating back to last season. Jaroslav Halak was steady between the pipes, turning aside 21 of 22 shots.
"It felt great. I had family and friends here tonight and the fans were outstanding for me after my first goal," Bergeron said. "I heard them and I'm proud to be a Montreal Canadien."
Josh Bailey had a shorthanded marker for the Islanders, who earned their first win of the season over Carolina on Wednesday. New York is now 1-4-3 on the young season and has dropped seven straight on the road dating back to last season. Martin Biron made 38 saves in defeat.
"That's not the way we're going to win games," Biron said. "We've been priming ourselves on winning defensively and after some sound games it wasn't there tonight. We're going to have to tighten it up. It's a game that got away from us."
Gomez's turnaround wrist shot from in close beat Biron to give Montreal the lead 7:55 into the opening period
The Canadiens then took advantage of a Freddy Meyer minor penalty late in the first when Bergeron's blast from the mid point with 1:24 left made it a 2-0 game.
Pacioretty added a tally 3:34 into the second stanza on a quick wrister that appeared to get through the pads of Biron.
With the Habs skating with the man advantage in the first minute of the third, Bailey struck shorthanded when he picked up a loose puck after Halak fumbled it behind his own net, then put it into a wide open net to get the Islanders on the board at 3-1.
Montreal reclaimed the three-goal lead with 9:25 remaining with Kyle Okposo in the box for high sticking. Cammalleri's wrist shot from a severe angle below the right circle surprised Biron just inside the near post. Lapierre then made it a 5-1 game when he put home a rebound from in close nearly 2 1/2 minutes later.
The Canadiens have taken eight of 10 overall in the series and have beaten New York in eight of the last 11 encounters at Bell Centre...Montreal center Glen Metropolit returned to the lineup after missing the last six games with a rib injury and notched a pair of assists.
