Sports Network | November 10, 2009
Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Miikka Kiprusoff made 25 saves to record his first shutout of the season and 31st of his career, and Jarome Iginla's first- period goal stood up in Calgary's 1-0 win over Montreal.
Iginla scored his ninth goal of the season for the Flames, who have matched a season-high with four straight wins and won in Montreal for the first time since December 13, 2000 after four consecutive losses.
"It was a good, intense physical game," Iginla said. "Maybe that's (because) both our teams are Canadian. We're trying to keep what we have going, and we know that (Montreal is) at home, and they play very strong, especially early in the game."
Olli Jokinen and Rene Bourque assisted on the game's only goal, and Calgary improved to 3-0-0 against the Eastern Conference and 5-1-1 on the road this season.
Montreal failed on all three of its power play attempts, and Jaroslav Halak stopped 30-of-31 shots in defeat, the Canadiens' third in their last four games and their third straight at home.
"It's tough in this league; there's a lot of good players, and a lot of good goaltenders," said Montreal's Brian Gionta. "I thought our effort was there for most of the game. It was just a matter of not finishing. It was a tough one to lose."
Iginla gave the Flames a 1-0 lead with 5:05 left in the first period on a wrist shot from the top of the slot that made its way through traffic, beating the goaltender on the stick side.
In a defensive second period, Kiprusoff and Halak made seven and nine saves, respectively, and the score remained 1-0 in favor of Calgary heading into the third.
It was more of the same in the third period. Montreal had one power play with 7 1/2 minutes left in the game but couldn't convert, and a holding penalty on Josh Gorges with just over two minutes to go all but sealed the Habs' fate.
Calgary swept the season series, 2-0...The Canadiens are 0-6-0 against the Western Conference this season...The Flames also visit Buffalo and Toronto on their three-game road trip that started Tuesday...Calgary's Curtis Glencross served the first of his three-game suspension.
