Recap: Philadelphia vs. Buffalo

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Thomas Vanek and Paul Gaustad both scored on the power play, as Buffalo edged Philadelphia, 3-2, at Wachovia Center.

Tyler Ennis tallied in his NHL debut and Ryan Miller made 29 saves for the Sabres, who have won three straight games.

Chris Pronger and Jeff Carter found the back of the net for the Flyers, who were riding a five-game winning streak. Ray Emery allowed three goals on 25 shots in defeat.

Trailing by a pair of goals, Philadelphia got on the board when Pronger unleashed a wrister from the right point that made its way through traffic and past Miller at 2:43 of the third.

Buffalo regained a two-goal cushion a little less than four minutes later on Gaustad's redirection of a Tyler Myers shot.

"The guys helped out on the draw," said Gaustad about the set-up for his score. "(Adam) Mair got it up to our d-men. The shot got through. I was lucky enough to get a stick on it. That's just paying a price to get to the front of the net."

Carter lit the lamp while short-handed with 9:39 remaining, but the Flyers couldn't produce an equalizer.

"Players have short memories, and it was a week ago that we beat them in their building," Pronger said of last Friday's 5-2 win in Buffalo. "They obviously wanted to come in here and play well, and they did. They took it to us in the first period and parts of the second. We got a little momentum in the final five minutes of the third, but it was a little too late."

Vanek's goal with the man advantage enabled the Sabres to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. While renowned pugilist Dan Carcillo served a minor penalty for cross-checking, Clarke MacArthur feed the puck to Derek Roy below the goal line at the right side of the net. He then quickly dished to the slot for Vanek, who fired a shot behind Emery at 3:11.

It marked only the third time this season Philadelphia surrendered the first goal.

Ennis then gave Buffalo a 2-0 lead with 5:10 remaining in the middle stanza. The Sabres' second selection (26th overall) in the 2008 draft, Ennis ripped a sharp angle shot that squeezed between Emery's arm and body as he scrambled to get across.

Philadelphia rookie forward James van Riemsdyk missed the game with the flu...Kimmo Timonen picked up an assist on Carter's goal for his 400th career point...Buffalo was 2-for-7 on the power play, while the Flyers were 0-for-4.
