(Sports Network) - The Florida Panthers will try for their fifth win in seven games when they host the New York Islanders for this evening's clash at BankAtlantic Center.
The Panthers had won three in a row before getting swept by Washington last weekend in a home-and-home series. However, after allowing seven goals in Saturday's loss in D.C., Florida buckled down and turned in a stellar defensive effort in Thursday's victory at Boston.
Cory Stillman scored the game-winner in the fourth round of the shootout, while Tomas Vokoun stopped 40 shots for his 34th career shutout, as the Panthers edged the Bruins, 1-0, at TD Garden.
The shootout went into a fourth round after the first three went scoreless. Michael Ryder was the shooter for Boston in the final round, but Vokoun made a great glove save on his attempt. Stillman then skated toward the net before making a quick move to the right and sliding a backhander past Tim Thomas.
Vokoun earned his third shutout of the year for the Panthers and picked up the slack for backup Scott Clemmensen, who was tagged for all seven goals and played the entire game in the lopsided loss to the Caps.
"It was nice of our goaltender to have a performance like that. He has had three shutouts in his last four starts. He deserved two points tonight and it was nice to get them for him," Florida head coach Peter DeBoer said.
Florida also had two of its top forwards back on the ice Thursday in Radek Dvorak and Dominic Moore. Dvorak had missed the last six games with a torn ligament in his left knee, while Moore sat out five games following nasal surgery.
This evening's test marks the first of two straight at home for the Panthers, who are just 2-5-0 as the host this year. Florida will also welcome Los Angeles to Sunrise on Monday.
The Islanders have won two of their last three games and have recorded a point in each game over that stretch (2-0-1). New York was in action Friday in Carolina and notched an overtime victory over the hapless Hurricanes.
Kyle Okposo picked off an errant clearing pass and rifled the game-winner past Manny Legace with 14.4 seconds to go in OT, lifting the Isles to the 4-3 triumph at RBC Center. The victory pushed Carolina's franchise-record losing streak to 14 games.
"It's a huge goal by Kyle, and it's all second efforts and we know we're going to get that from him all the time," Islanders head coach Scott Gordon said.
John Tavares, the No. 1 overall pick in the June draft, scored twice for the Islanders and leads all rookies with seven goals on the season, while Matt Moulson had a strong game and picked up two assists.
Mark Streit also scored for New York, which came in having lost three of four. Martin Biron finished with 25 saves in the victory.
The Isles are making the third stop on a season-high, seven-game road trip tonight. They are 2-4-4 as the visiting club this season.
Florida and the Islanders split four meetings last year with each club winning both games on their home ice. The Panthers have taken seven of nine overall in the series and New York has dropped five straight and six of seven at BankAtlantic Center.
