(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers will try to get back on the winning track when they visit the struggling Florida Panthers for tonight's Southeast Division clash at BankAtlantic Center.
This marks the second game this week between the division rivals after the Thrashers earned a 4-3 regulation win in Atlanta on Monday. Florida has still taken three of five and five of the last eight overall meetings in the series and the Thrashers have dropped four of their last six tests in Sunrise.
The Thrashers had tied a season high with four straight wins, but had the streak snapped Thursday night by the visiting New York Islanders. The setback also ended a stretch of five straight games (4-0-1) with a point for Atlanta.
The Islanders were led in the 4-1 victory at Philips Arena by Matt Moulson's first career hat trick. Slava Kozlov scored the lone goal for Atlanta, while Ondrej Pavelec finished with 23 saves.
"We started slow again," Pavelec said. "Hopefully we can be better next time, but we had no luck tonight. It's like we need more time to wake up properly. We need to fight a little more in our home building."
The loss to New York marked the end of a three-game homestand for Atlanta, which will begin a stretch of four straight road contests tonight. The Thrashers have a strong 8-2-1 record as the guest this year and have won three straight and five of their last six road games.
The Panthers, meanwhile, have lost six of their last seven games and were pounded Thursday night in Washington. Alexander Semin posted two goals and two assists as the Capitals, who were without superstar winger Alex Ovechkin, rocked Florida, 6-2, at Verizon Center.
Stephen Weiss and Jeff Taffe scored for the Panthers and Weiss extended his point streak to five games. He has five goals and three assists during that span.
Scott Clemmensen lasted less than 12 minutes in his start, allowing two goals on 11 shots. Alexander Salak took the loss after he was burned for four goals on 33 shots.
"They took over and were better all over the ice then us. It was a mess from there on in," said Florida coach Peter DeBoer.
Panthers No. 1 goaltender Tomas Vokoun has sat out the last two games after suffering an ear injury Monday against Atlanta. Vokoun was injured by his own teammate Keith Ballard, who swung his stick at the goal in frustration following a Thrashers goal and hit the veteran netminder in the head.
Vokoun's injury isn't serious, but he will remain out of the lineup until he can get a mask over his head without experiencing too much pain. He is considered a game-time decision for tonight's game, according to DeBoer.
Florida ended a four-game home losing streak in a shootout win over Colorado on Wednesday, but the Panthers are just 4-6-3 as the host this season.
