(Sports Network) - The Florida Panthers will try to win consecutive games for the first time in three weeks when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins for tonight's clash at Mellon Arena.
Since winning three in a row during their last winning streak from November 18-21, the Panthers have managed just a 2-5-4 record. One of those victories came Friday night in New Jersey as Michael Frolik recorded his first multi- goal game of the season, helping Florida take down the Devils, 4-2, at Prudential Center.
Frolik scored twice to register his first two-goal game since March 3. The Panthers had been mired in a slump that saw them lose nine of 10 and score only five goals in the previous four contests.
Shawn Matthias and Jordan Leopold also scored, while Scott Clemmensen made 26 saves against his old team to earn the victory. Clemmensen played in 40 games for the Devils last season and was a huge boost for the team while Martin Brodeur sat out a large part of the regular season due to injury.
"All the sights and sounds of this building put me at ease," Clemmensen said. "It was good to be back here. I have a lot of good memories in this building. Tonight's win is up there."
Florida, which will end a four-game road trip Monday against the New York Islanders, is 8-8-1 as the guest this year. The Panthers had lost four straight road games before beating the Devils.
The Penguins ended a two-game slide their last time out, as the defending Stanley Cup champions posted a close win Thursday in Montreal. Pascal Dupuis scored the go-ahead goal with 6:39 left in the third period to lift Pittsburgh to the 3-2 regulation victory at Bell Centre.
Dupuis also registered an assist, while Sergei Gonchar had a goal and a helper for the Penguins. Pittsburgh, which also got a goal from Matt Cooke, has won four of its last six overall. Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 19-of-21 shots in the win.
Pittsburgh broke a 2-2 tie with 6:39 left in the third period. Dupuis took a rink-wide pass from Brooks Orpik and fired a slap shot from the top of the left circle that handcuffed Carey Price to put the Pens back in front.
"It was knuckle puck," Dupuis said about his goal. "If I don't know where it's going neither does Price, but I'll take it."
Pittsburgh, which is 10-5-1 as the host this year, will try to halt a two-game home losing streak tonight. Beginning with this evening's test, the Pens will play five of their next seven games at the Igloo.
The Penguins are 2-0 against Florida this year, but the Panthers were able to push the reigning champs past regulation in both contests. Pittsburgh has taken four of five and nine of the last 12 overall matchups in the series and the Panthers have dropped two straight and five of six in the Steel City.
