Recap: NY Islanders vs. Philadelphia

Sports Network | December 27, 2009

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Michael Leighton stopped 28 shots as Philadelphia edged the New York Islanders, 2-1, at Nassau Coliseum.

Danny Briere and Jeff Carter scored for the Flyers, who won three games in succession for the first time since taking five in a row from October 31- November 12.

"We've really tried to come in with a smile on our face and work hard and have some fun, go out and play," Carter said. "It's starting to turn around."

Jon Sim provided the only offense for the Islanders, who had won two in a row coming in. Martin Biron played well in the loss, also making 28 saves.

"Marty's been playing great for us," Islanders forward Trent Hunter said. "We haven't given him the kinds of support needed and hung him out to dry a few times. That's really something we can't do."

Briere had a goal waved off a little more than three minutes gone in the third period, when a replay determined he intentionally kicked in his own rebound at the left post. The forward attempted to follow his shot, which eluded Biron, but had his stick tied up by an Islanders defender and the disc caromed off his skate incidentally. The review, however, apparently revealed a kicking motion.

Leighton made sure the one-goal lead held up with seven saves in the final 20 minutes, and the Flyers withstood two Islanders power play opportunities to emerge victorious.

Briere snuck a shot inside the right post from the right circle for a 1-0 Flyers edge 1:51 into the contest.

Sim then broke down the middle, gathered a bouncing puck and tied the game at the 3:35 mark of the second, but Carter finished off a 2-on-1 by one-timing a Scott Hartnell feed with 3:07 left in the period.

The Flyers have won 13 consecutive games over the Islanders and 16 of 17 since the start of the 2007-08 season...Hartnell posted a pair of assists for Philadelphia...Three of Philly's six wins in the last month have come at the Islanders' expense.
