(Sports Network) - Now that a lengthy losing streak is behind them, the Columbus Blue Jackets will try to post consecutive wins for the first time since mid-November when they visit the New York Islanders tonight at Nassau Coliseum.
The Blue Jackets ended a nine-game skid with a 1-0 overtime victory Monday against the visiting Detroit Red Wings. The victory allowed Columbus to avoid setting a new club mark for longest winless streak at 10 games.
It was also just the second victory in 14 games for Columbus, which hasn't won back-to-back contests since a three-game winning streak from November 13-19.
The Blue Jackets will try to end another skid tonight, as they hope to avoid a club-record 12th straight road loss. Columbus, which is 6-12-3 as the guest this year, has lost 11 in a row since last winning on the road on November 19 in Dallas. The Jackets also lost 11 straight away from home from March 25, 2001-October 29, 2002.
Fredrik Modin was the hero in Monday's victory over the Red Wings, as he scored 3:12 into overtime to lift Columbus to the close win in the finale of a home-and-home series at Nationwide Arena. In the extra session, Modin skated in on the left side, curled the puck back and threw a shot on net. Jimmy Howard made the save, but the rebound kicked out to the right side where Modin followed up his shot and slammed the second one home for the win.
"This is now three (games) in a row now (he's played well)," said Columbus head coach Ken Hitchcock about Modin. "He's starting to really play well. He's got his legs under him and some speed. I really like the way he's playing."
Steve Mason made 34 saves for his second shutout of the season for the Blue Jackets, who hadn't won since a 3-0 win over Florida on December 9 and had gone 0-7-2 during that time.
"I felt like, for four games now, if we kept playing the same way, good things will happen," said Hitchcock.
The Blue Jackets made a trade just a few hours prior to Monday's game, as they dealt forward Jason Chimera to Washington for forward Chris Clark and defenseman Milan Jurcina.
Clark, who was Washington's captain, struggled with injuries the past two seasons, but has tallied four goals with 15 points in 38 games this year. Jurcina posted only four assists in 27 games this year for the Caps, coming off a career-best 14 points in 79 games a season ago. Chimera had eight goals and 17 points in 39 games for Columbus this season, his fifth with the club.
The Islanders come into tonight off a loss as they were edged on Sunday by visiting Philadelphia. The 2-1 setback halted a two-game win streak for New York and was the club's fourth loss in six outings.
Jon Sim provided the only offense for the Islanders, while former Flyers goaltender Martin Biron played well in the loss, making 28 saves.
"Marty's been playing great for us," Islanders forward Trent Hunter said. "We haven't given him the kinds of support needed and hung him out to dry a few times. That's really something we can't do."
New York is 8-8-2 as the host this year and has lost four of its last five at the Coliseum.
The Blue Jackets are 7-2 with a tie all-time record against the Islanders, but Columbus has dropped its last two tests on Long Island.
