(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers will try to avoid their first three-game losing streak in nearly a month when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at Wachovia Center.
The Flyers had won eight of 10 games (8-1-1) following a four-game slide from December 15-21, but is currently coming off a pair of poor defensive showings in back-to-back regulation losses.
Philadelphia had a four-game winning streak halted in Toronto on Thursday as the Maple Leafs recorded the 4-0 victory at Air Canada Centre. The Flyers followed that loss with Sunday's 5-3 setback in Washington. Brooks Laich picked up a pair of goals to lead the Capitals to the win at Verizon Center.
Jeff Carter, James van Riemsdyk and Danny Briere scored for the Flyers and Ray Emery was tagged for all five goals on 22 shots in his first start since recovering from abdominal surgery. Emery, who last played on December 9, is expected to get the start again in tonight's game.
"Some of the early goals were tough ones to give up. We missed a couple assignments, didn't cover guys on face-offs and didn't follow rebounds," noted Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. "They are very dynamic in transition and we had to do a better job of coverage."
Tonight marks the first test of a six-game homestand for the Flyers, who have won three straight in Philly and are 12-9-2 as the host this season.
The Blue Jackets will try to notch consecutive wins tonight after ending a three-game slide with Monday's home win over St. Louis. Raffi Torres scored a pair of goals, as Columbus took down the Blues, 4-2, at Nationwide Arena.
Rick Nash and Chris Clark also lit the lamp for the Blue Jackets, while Mathieu Garon made 30 saves for the victors.
"They really come at you the first 10 minutes and we haven't been able to survive the first 10 minutes. We've really dug ourselves a hole. I thought we got better and better as the game went on. I thought we really managed the game properly. We had a lot of solid line play today," Columbus head coach Ken Hitchcock said.
On the injury front, Columbus placed forward Fredrik Modin on injured reserve Monday and activated defenseman Marc Methot, who logged over 18 minutes of ice time in the win over St. Louis.
Columbus is playing the first of three straight on the road tonight and will try to improve upon a dreadful 8-15-4 record as the guest this season. The Blue Jackets will visit Boston on Thursday before capping the swing Saturday in Minnesota.
The Blue Jackets posted a 3-0 home win over Philly last season, marking Columbus' first win in eight all-time meetings in this series. The Flyers are 4-1-0 with three ties against Columbus, which is 0-2 with a tie in three all- time stops in the City of Brotherly Love.
