Recap: Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa
Sports Network | January 29, 2010
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Brian Elliott stopped 30 shots as the Ottawa Senators matched a franchise record with their eighth straight victory, 4-1 over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The run ties a mark that the team set from October 13 - November 6, 2007. The Senators will attempt to break that record against Montreal on Saturday.
Nick Foligno had a goal and an assist while Mike Fisher, Chris Kelly and Jason Spezza each lit the lamp for the Senators, who have not lost since a 6-1 rout at the hands of the Thrashers on January 12.
"I'm more happy with the win than the winning streak," said Ottawa head coach Cory Clouston. "We played a tough team tonight in their own building and our guys managed to come out with the win, that's the most important thing to me."
Evgeni Malkin scored the lone goal while Marc-Andre Fleury gave up three goals on 27 shots for the Penguins, who had won three of four coming in.
"They threw some pucks on the net and had guys crashing, trying to screen," Fleury said.
Pittsburgh grabbed the lead just 94 seconds in as Nick Johnson dished the puck over to the right circle for Malkin, who took a stride in and snapped a wrister into the right corner of the net.
Ottawa, though, tied the game halfway through the frame as Fisher slammed home a Foligno pass from the low right side.
About 3 1/2 minutes later, the Sens made it a 2-1 game. Jarkko Ruutu had the puck at the left boards and threw a shot on net that Fleury couldn't control and Kelly was in front to bang in the rebound.
The second period went scoreless as neither side was able to put the puck in the net despite each team throwing 11 shots on net.
Ottawa gave itself some breathing space 4:27 into the third as Daniel Alfredsson sent a touch pass over to the left circle for Spezza, who wrister accounted for a 3-1 advantage.
Foligno's empty-net goal with 1:28 to play sealed the win.
The Penguins host Detroit on Sunday...Spezza has a five-game goal streak...Ottawa has not allowed more than two goals in any of the games on its winning streak...Each team won twice in the season series...Both sides had three power play chances, but neither of them took advantage.
