Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Brooks Laich had a goal and an assist, as the Washington Capitals held off the New York Rangers, 4-3, in the final preseason game for both teams.
Mike Knubel, Alexander Semin, and Christopher Bourque each scored a goal for the Capitals, who finished the preseason with a 4-2 record. Semyon Varlamov stopped 28-of-31 shots for Washington, which begins the regular season against the Bruins on Thursday, October 1.
Artem Anisimov, Evgeny Grachev, and Donald Brashear scored one goal apiece for the Rangers, who scored three goals on 20 shots in the third period. Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 20-of-24 shots and Stephen Valiquette stopped all four shots he faced for New York, which ended the preseason with a 3-4 record and starts the regular season versus the Penguins on Friday, October 2.
