Harrison Reassigned - Canadiens at Hurricanes, Game Day Preview

Defenseman Niclas Wallin will return to the lineup for the 7 p.m. matchup between the Carolina Hurricanes, (9-21-6) and the Montreal Canadiens, (17-18-3) tonight at the RBC. Jay Harrison will be the odd man out. (UPDATE: The Hurricanes just announced that they reassigned the defenseman to Albany today).

The blueline is still a bit of a patchwork as Brett Carson remains in the lineup. Tim Gleason continues to be bothered by the injury to his face suffered in Washington a couple of weeks ago. He tried wearing a cage at the morning skate, but hated it and will go back to a visor tonight. On Monday night he started out wearing a visor, but had it removed during the first intermission.

In the meantime, Joni Pitkanen continues to garner major minutes of TOI. As Cory reported yesterday, he has over 700 minutes logged so far this season, more than any other Carolina player, even though he has missed 10 games due to various injuries.

I asked the defenseman today if there was a limit as to how many minutes he could, or should play? "It varies from game to game," Pitkanen said. "Some nights 26 minutes seems like a lot if I do a lot of skating. Other nights, I can do more. It depends on each game."

I asked him how he felt about going over 30 minutes, like has has done at least a couple of times this season. "Oh no, that is too much," Pitkanen shook his head as he answered. "I am not at my best when that happens, it is too tiring."

Other than the change on the blueline, the Canes will ice the same lineup they had on Monday against the Rangers. Carolina goalie Cam Ward will be facing Jaroslav Halak in net for the Habs. Ward is 9-2-2 in 13 career starts against Montreal.

While Eric Staal and Sergei Samsonov missed yesterday's practice, both will play tonight. Ray Whitney took this morning off and missed the morning skate. Paul Maurice joked that he felt the winger had probably attended enough morning skates during the course of his career. Whitney will play tonight as well.

This is the third contest in a four game homestand for the Canes. They are 1-1 so far and have an overall record of 8-8-2 at home. They finish the homestand on Saturday night against the Philadelphia Flyers. That one should be interesting.

Montreal is coming off an overtime win in Atlanta on Monday night. They shut out the Islanders, 3-0 just before that, but were riding a five game losing streak prior to facing the Islanders. For more information about the Habs, check out Habs Eyes on the Prize and Habs Inside/Out.

Interestingly enough, the Canadiens have not won a game on December 23 since 1945. When told of that little tidbit during the press conference, Paul Maurice quipped, "Let's hope the streak continues."

The Canes lost in a shootout in their only previous meeting with the Habs this season.

Undecided about going to the game? Erik Cole bobbleheads will be given out to the first 10,000 fans. Also, there is a holiday "two-for-one" ticket promotion for those who bring in can goods for the poor. Don't miss this game, Caniacs.

FS Carolinas will have the television broadcast and even though John Forslund worked in Chicago last night and flew into town at 6 a.m. this morning, he will be fresh and ready to go with his partner in crime, Tripp Tracy. Mike Maniscalco will host the Stormfront and Aftermath on 99.9 The Fan.

Bryan Rodney Reassigned to Albany

The Carolina Hurricanes reassigned defenseman Bryan Rodney to Albany this afternoon. It is expected that Tim Gleason will be ready to play against the New York Rangers on Monday night.

This move means that Rodney remains behind Jay Harrison and Brett Carson on the Carolina depth chart, a position many fans might not agree with. While Harrison and Carson have played well, Rodney is better on the powerplay and has scored more points per game played. The Carolina powerplay has thrived recently and is rated the best in the NHL during the month of December.

Time will tell if the reassignment hurts the team's performance while with the man advantage.

The Carolina Hurricanes’ nightmare season continued Friday night with a 6-3 loss in South Florida to the Panthers. The good news? The Canes get another crack at their Southeast Division foes tonight at the RBC Center when both teams come to Raleigh to wrap up an old-fashinioned home-and-home series.

The team Florida faced Friday night could look different from the one iced this evening, as Tim Gleason and Niclas Wallin may return to the Carolina blueline. Coach Paul Maurice shuffled his lines some in the loss, so there's no telling yet what the forward lines will look like, but expect the same 12 to dress as last night.

Scott Clemmensen will likely start in goal for the Panthers, while Carolina may look to Cam Ward, who was pulled in favor of Manny Legace after the Panthers’ fifth goal early in the third period.

There's not much more to say about two teams that played last night. Florida right wing Radek Dvorak was an impressive plus-5 last night, getting a goal and two assists to lead the Panthers. The Canes, on the other hand, got some offense from some unexpected contributors in the loss. Patrick Dwyer got his second career NHL goal and first of the season, while Andrew Alberts added two assists and fourth-liner Scott Walker got his second goal of the season.

Eric Staal also got his second goal in as many games and third in four outings — he now has 14 points in 11 games since returning from injury — but he and linemates Ray Whitney and Tuomo Ruutu were all minus-3 on the night.

Carolina will need top-to-bottom effort to avoid losing their fifth game in six outings.

The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the RBC Center and the game will be broadcast by FS-Carolinas and 99.9 The Fan. We'll update the status of Gleason and Wallin, plus who will be in net, as we find out.

Patrick Dwyer and Bryan Rodney Recalled from Albany

The Carolina Hurricanes announced this afternoon that they recalled forward Patrick Dwyer and defenseman Bryan Rodney from the Albany River Rats. Both players will be available for tomorrow night's game against Dallas.

It was expected that the team would recall a forward because they were short a player, although Jiri Tlusty might have been the team's first choice. Tlusty has had some kind of visa trouble in Toronto.

It was unexpected that the team would recall Rodney. This move could lead to speculation that something concrete might be up with Aaron Ward, or perhaps there is another injury on the blueline. In Ottawa, Ward, Tim Gleason, Andrew Alberts, Brett Carson, Jay Harrison, and Joni Pitkanen all played.

Of that group, Gleason is the only one who has not made it to practice this week. Perhaps he is not ready to play tomorrow night? Either way, it's interesting that they recalled Rodney. We will find out what is up.

The Carolina Hurricanes, (7-18-6) are in Canada's Capital City to play the Ottawa Senators, (15-11-4) tonight in the final game of Carolina's four game road trip.

This will be a short preview since I am traveling today. It would not be surprising if the Canes skipped the normal pregame skate and rested up for this game. The lineup should be pretty much the same as Friday night in Washington, if Tim Gleason can go again.

Also, Paul Maurice said that he was going to start Manny Legace and give Cam Ward a break. The team does not want to over-work Ward after just coming back from injury, plus Maurice said that Legace had played well of late.

The Sens are coming off a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers but have lost five of their last seven games. Brian Elliott (unconfirmed) will probably be in net for them.

Ottawa is led by Daniel Alfredsson and Mike Fisher.

The Canes still have the worst road record in the NHL, (1-11-4) and have yet to win the back end of a back to back this year, (0-5-1). To their credit, they have been playing entertaining hockey the past several games and are still trying, even though they remain at the bottom of the league.

The game will start at 7 p.m. and once again will be televised by FS Carolinas. The Open Game Thread will start at 6:30.

The Carolina Hurricanes battled to a regulation tie, but finally succumbed to the offensive onslaught of the Washington Capitals, dropping a game to their division rivals in overtime Friday night, 4-3. The Canes were out-shot in each and every period as the Caps finished the game with a 40-19 advantage.

The visitors managed to block a total of 28 shots and the Caps missed the net 17 times, meaning the home team put a total of 85 shots on the beleaguered team from Carolina. The Canes made their shots and chances count as they missed the net five times and only had 13 shots blocked.

Speaking of blocked shots, Tim Gleason got a stick on one of Alexander Ovechkin's wristers and took a puck to the face late in the first period. It did not look like Gleason would return as he took 30 stitches and had to have a full face shield added to his helmet, but not only did he come back to the ice, he would tie the score on a shorthanded chance which at least gave the Hurricanes a much needed point for the night's efforts.

After the game, enough couldn't be said about Gleason's effort. "He's unbelievable", said Brandon Sutter. "He's one of those guys who always shows a lot of character and he's been doing that for us all year".

Paul Maurice said that it showed the leadership qualities of the defenseman. "There are very few people who could do what he did and it just goes to show the leadership that he provides to the team."

The "Gleason for Captain" bandwagon just got bigger tonight.

The Canes started out well, even though they were out-shot in the opening period, 14-5. Jiri Tlusty opened the scoring for the visitors as he received a perfect cross-ice pass from Brandon Sutter. It was the first goal as a Hurricane for Tlusty on his very first shift for the team.

Sutter and Tlusty showed great speed on the play and beat the Capitals' defense down the ice. But the flashy winger will need to bone up on defense, he was on the ice for two of the Caps' scores.

The Canes got a bit lucky and scored again later in the first period when Eric Staal tried one of his patented wrap around attempts. The puck initially bounced back to him but he shoved it right back at Jose Theodore's feet. Somehow the puck got in and the period ended with the score 2-0, even though it seemed like the Caps were controlling play for the most part.

The Caps would tie things up in the second on the back of Alexander Semin, who scored twice. Semin scored his second goal with just a fraction of a second left in the period, giving his team an emotional lift and sending the Canes to the locker room feeling like they were snake-bitten.

Tomas Fleischmann put the home team ahead just inside of three minutes into the third period on a nice backdoor play set up by Mathieu Perreault.

But during a penalty kill, Tim Gleason stole the puck from Mike Green, skated in the offensive zone, and blasted a slap shot by Theodore. Gleason won't be asked to perform in a shootout anytime soon, but it was a perfect shot and gutsy effort by the injured defenseman.

The Caps would end the game quickly in OT as Mike Green atoned for his earlier gaffe by scoring just 1:16 into the extra frame.

The point gives the Hurricanes three points so far in this brutal road stretch as they now travel to Ottawa to take on the Senators Saturday night.

Game notes:

Carolina was credited with 19 hits led by Andrew Alberts with five and Tuomo Ruutu with four.
Brett Carson had an amazing eight blocked shots. Tim Gleason and Joni Pitkanen had four each.
The Canes had 19 shots on goal, led by Staal's four. The Caps had 40 shots led by Semin and Ovechkin with seven and six respectively.
Tlusty and Sutter look like they will be a good combination for the future. As mentioned previously, they both have excellent speed and seem to have chemistry.
Cam Ward played a very good game, but was not perfect. Needless to say he was kept busy all night long.
One can not say enough about Tim Gleason's effort. He got a point for the team and earned the respect of everyone with his gutsy performance.

Tales of the Tape: Bill Guerin vs. Tim Gleason

Yeah, it sucks to lose a game, and it sucks worse when the one fight isn't a shining victory to help ease the pain a bit. But this one is fast and furious, so hopefully it will be somewhat entertaining.

What is there really to say on this one? Bill Guerin drops his gloves as soon as the puck is dropped and goes after Tim Gleason. After a shove, Gleason answers him and starts pounding away on Guerin's helmet. Guerin gets a bit of leverage and lifts Gleason up, pounding away when he hits the ice. Though the takedown was pretty, I have to give Gleason the win here for the onslaught of hits. It's a hollow victory though, as his hand simply cannot be feeling good after hitting helmet so many times. Ouch - just check out his knuckles when the camera zooms in.

I've heard a bit of whisperings that Guerin should have gotten an instigator call for this. What do you think?

Monday night was a weird one around the NHL, especially in the first half hour or so of the hockey night.
First, Keith Ballard took out his own goaltender with a two handed chop across his head. He obviously meant to break his stick over the post, but he missed, and Tomas Vokoun's face got the brunt of it. [Litter Box Cats]
Second, Alex Ovechkin collided knee-on-knee with Carolina's Tim Gleason. AO got the worst of the blow, an adding insult to the injury for the Caps, he received a major penalty and a game misconduct. Carolina Loses Corvo and Game: Capitals 3, Hurricanes 2

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joe Corvo scored the first goal of the game, then was cut badly in the back of his leg after completing a check and was taken to a local hospital for attention as the Hurricanes lost yet another game, this time to the Washington Capitals, 3-2. Team officials did not release any specific information about the injury, but they looked grim talking about the ailment after the game.

Corvo not only led the Carolina blueline in scoring, he was one of the league leaders in average time on the ice. More information about his injury will be released on Tuesday.

The Canes had another scary moment later in the first period when Alex Ovechkin took out Tim Gleason with a knee on knee collision. Ovechkin lined up Gleason, but as Gleason made a nice move to avoid the hit, OV appeared to lead with his knee causing a nasty collision.

For awhile Carolina was playing with just four defensemen, but Gleason toughed it out and came back to the game. Paul Maurice said afterward that the blueliner knew the team was in a bad situation and came back and played as best he could, even though he was obviously hurting.

"He's going to be hurting tomorrow for sure" the coach said.

In the meantime, Ovechkin, who had to be helped off the ice himself, could be facing a suspension. The refs awarded him a five minute kneeing penalty along with a game misconduct. It's unknown how injured he might be.

The Hurricanes failed to score on the ensuing five minute powerplay, but keep in mind they had just lost two of their point men in Gleason and Corvo. Aaron Ward said that the team was still a bit shaken immediately afterward, facing the possible loss of two of their best defensemen and not knowing how serious the injuries were.

Regardless, the fact that the team failed to score during that powerplay was a momentum killer and the Caps took advantage by scoring shortly after the kill, taking a 2-1 lead. The home team ended up 1 for 7 with the man advantage.

In the second period, Nicklas Backstrom faked out goalie Michael Leighton and lured him out of the net. Then he did a spin and fired the puck into the empty net. No word where the Carolina defense was as the crafty Capital had all kinds of time and space on the play.

The score remained 3-1 until the very end when Matt Cullen would score a desperation goal with just 16 seconds left on the clock. The Canes out-shot and out-chanced the Caps in two out of three periods but could not solve Jose Theodore, who had an excellent game.

The team now has a few days off now and will wait until Saturday afternoon for their next game which will be against the Vancouver Canucks at the RBC.

Game Notes:

Joni Pitkanen had over 33 minutes of ice time but finished with a -2. He had four shots on goal and two hits.
Rod Brind`Amour only played seven plus minutes but also finished with a -2. He had zero shots on goal and one hit.
Aaron Ward finished with a -1 but had six hits and two blocked shots.
The Canes out-hit the Caps 45-21 and were led by Niclas Wallin with seven. Tuomo Ruutu had six.
Carolina had 40 shots on goal led by Eric Staal's nine. Staal has got to get unglued if the Canes are to have any viable success but he still does not seem 100% healthy.
Brandon Sutter, Jussi Jokinen, and Matt Cullen were the only (plus) players for the Canes. They each finished +1.
Tim Gleason picked up a game misconduct himself for pulling Tyler Sloan off of Eric Staal and challenging him to a fight. I didn't see any punches thrown, but the refs must of thought it was flagrant enough to deserve a "third man in" penalty.

There will be a lot of talk around the league on Tuesday about the latest Ovechkin transgression. Most outside of Washington seem to think it's time for some type of suspension, although many from the Nation's Capital have already come to his defense. The question is, how many of these types of hits does he get away with before someone really gets hurt?

If you have not seen the replay yet, here is the You Tube. There is some great followup on Puck Daddy here. If you look at the still frame of Ovechkin's extended leg in Sean Leahy's article, even the blindest of the MVP's fans should have a hard time honestly condoning that hit.
