The struggles of this NHL franchise in the desert have been well documented all summer long. We're still waiting for a decision as to the long term future of the team, but they're here for this season and all the speculation in the world won't change a preview of the team will it? (No, it won't) We're just one short week away from the season opener so now it's down to the nuts and bolts of what the on ice product is going to look like.

The upside of this team is that with the exception of Olli Jokinen and some fourth line forwards and 5/6 pairing Dmen, this is the same team that went into the All-Star break in 5th place in the Western Conference. The team promptly fell apart after the break with all the rumors about the financial troubles and the general lack of experience. With some more mid-aged experience to bridge the gap between the veteran and the kids, there really is a lot of potential for a breakout year.

Amid all the uncertainty this summer, just on Thursday the Coyotes signed a new head coach in the form of Dave Tippett following Wayne Gretzky's resignation. Tippett brings with him a proven system that has proven results in Dallas. While he's a little late to the party in terms of training camp, there's a lot of talent for him to work with here in Phoenix. This biggest question mark with this team is how they'll react to all the media that will be focused on them, especially at the beginning of the season. If they're able to turn it into an us against the world type of situation then we could have a strong start. If, on the other hand, they react like they did down the stretch last season and turn all that inward and implode it'll be a disaster. There's not a whole lot of room for error this year as the team needs to show outside observers and potential fans in the valley that the team is the real deal.

Without a whole lot of budget room to work with this summer, GM Don Maloney put together a pretty decent lineup. He did especially well filling in the defensive holes that have plagued the team the last few years. The spots that had been held by any combination of Ken Klee, Dimitri Kalinin and David Hale have now been filled with Adrian Aucoin and Jim Vandermeer. Aucoin has some offensive ability but is a good puckmover, while Vandermeer is all about defense. Along with the existing defense of Zbynek Michalek, Kurt Sauer, Ed Jovanovski and Keith Yandle this year's blueline pairs look solid.

At Forward, some of the youth has been sent down to San Antonio already to get a little more experience. Viktor Tikhonov and Kyle Turris are the biggest names to be sent to the farm. Turris needs to just grow since he's a small little twig man and Tikhonov just needs more experience. He had a solid time on the PK with the big club last year, but he had a weak camp and needs more time to develop. I expect to see both at times this year though. In Camp Brett MacLean and Kevin Porter have both played well and will Challenge for a roster spot. MacLean tore up the OHL in the 06-07 and 07-08 seasons (going 47-53-100 and 61-58-119 respectively) before moving to the AHL last year. In 74 games on a pretty bad San Antonio team he was able to go 21-19-40. If he can bring some scoring touch to the team that would be great. Most of the roster though is already set. Shane Doan will once again captain the team and be his usual awesome self.Peter Mueller and Martin Hanzal are now entering their third seasons. Both will be looking for new contracts this summer and both need to pick up their games to get good ones. Mueller hit the Sophomore slump HARD and needs to find his scoring touch again. Hanzal was a solid Defensive forward, and had flashes of offense here and there last season. He needs to simply shoot the puck though, he has a cannon of a shot, but he tends to pass a little too much when he has chances. Other notables are Mikkel Boedker who had a pretty good rookie year, Radim Vrbata, who returns to the club and Scottie Upshall who needs to deliver on the potential everyone says he has.

Ilya Bryzgalov will continue to hold down the starting spot this season. Jason LaBarbera was brought in to back him up, but i'm not seeing anything in LaBarbera that makes me think he's going to give Bryz the competition everyone thinks he needs. Bryz has been on the decline, but with this year's defensive unit he needs to show he can get the job done.

Season Prediction: The Coyotes make it into the playoffs. Why? Because they have to. It's the only end that makes sense for this crappy story so far. I'm not saying we win the division or anything crazy like that, but bringing in Tippett and an honest to god system instead of an ever changing one can only do good things for this team. Like I said earlier, this team is packed with potential. We saw small parts of that potential realized in the first part of last season. The key is to keep it going through April and hopefully into May. I think Tippett is able to get them to do just that. He brings the mustache back and leads the Coyotes to a 7th place finish in the West and at least make the playoffs interesting. Feel good story of the year and everything. David Shoalts and Canadian media outlets complain about how our playoff spot wasn't given to Edmonton automatically.

Coyotes Open Training Camp Practices Start Today

Officially camp actually started yesterday, but the first public practices start today at 9:00 am. Here's a look at those invited to camp this year. There are a few names in there that you might recognize from around the league that have not signed with the Coyotes. Ryan Hollweg formerly with Toronto, Aaron Downey from Detroit, Ross Lupaschuk from Anaheim and the KHL and Mitch Fritz from the Islanders. None of them have particularly impressive resumes, but I imagine they're trying out for the position of "Hey someone got hurt, call us up from San Antonio."

Wayne Gretzky, doesn't look to be coming to camp as of today, Ulf Samuellson will be leading in his place. With Wayne's contract situation in the air due to the bankruptcy mess, he simply decided he wasn't going to be there. But I guess Coyotes fans will be getting what a large portion of them had wanted for some time, Wayne out as head coach.

Sabres Comeback For Important Victory

This game had all the makings of another Buffalo loss and a disappointing end to the season but the Sabres never quit and instead it was one of the most memorable games of the season.

When the Sabres were trailing 2-1 after two periods their chances of a comeback seemed dim because of their recent third period struggles. They grew even dimmer early in the third period. The Panthers went ahead 3-1 on a goal that was credited to Michael Frolik although it may have been gloved in by Brett Maclean (In fairness to the officials...it was very difficult to tell).

Sensing the season was on the line, the Sabres turned up the heat on the Florida Panthers. The Sabres started firing shots from all directions and finally Jason Pominville tipped a Henrik Tallinder shot by Vokoun. After the Pominville goal there was sudenly some hope and I was literally yelling at the TV for MacArthur to shoot just before he tied the game. The Sabres were passing up those chances in the first two periods and proved that shooting the puck on net is a really good idea.

The playoff hopes are still dim but they live to see another day. A win will have everyone feeling good and now Ryan Miller is expected back in goal on Friday night. That should spark the team but more importantly it will give the fans some hope.

Third Period Heroics

Many people have been questioning the heart and the character of this team and tonight they proved that there was no quit in this team. The effort tonight was no better than it was on Friday and Saturday but the result was much better. The three goals in just over two minutes have the Sabres fan base buzzing and they even said on the broadcast that a fan said "I miss this team". We had grown accustomed to wins like this and it was nice to see again this season.

For all the praise I am giving the Sabres, it is important to remember the opponent. The Florida Panthers have been just as bad as the Buffalo Sabres recently and they have a knack for losing third period leads as well.

Special Teams Bounce back

The Sabres have relied upon their special teams all season and they have both struggled recently. Tonight was a different story and it was the story. The Sabres took advantage of a power play in the first period to tie the score 1-1 with less than a minute left in tthe period. The Sabres also scored the winning goal with the man advantage. The penalty killing was really good but even more important was staying out of the box. Florida only had two man advantages and they failed to convert on each of them.

Keith Ballard is a Scum Bag

When Max Afinogenov scored the game winning goal into an open net it sparked a mini-brawl. Nathan Horton took most of the blame for starting the melee from the Sabres broadcast team (RJ and Harry) and the officials who assesed him a double-minor but it was Keith Ballard that gave Max a cheapshot. Ballard skated across half the ice to throw a shot at the head of Afinogenov and Max took a hit from Horton just after that.

The Sabres responded to what they (and I) considered a cheap hit and Rivet went after Ballard immediately. Earlier in the game Ballard threw a punch into the face of Jochen Hecht after a whistle near the Panthers net.

The hit was not all that vicious but it was the way that it was done that was disappointing. Ballard is guy that plays a tough physical style and a player I HAD the utmost respect for...I've changed my mind, he is a scum bag.

Robitaille is a Non-Analyst

I often disagree with the opinions of Mike Robitaille during the intermission and on the Shootout but tonight he crossed the line. Tonight he proved what an idiot he really is. The cameras showed that Lindy Ruff and Max Afinogenov were in a shouting match of sorts on the bench. Rob Ray immediatley pointed to the fact that Max had a shift that was over two minutes long. Luckily for us Harry Neale mentioned that the entire shift was in the defensive zone and there was nothing he could do until they cleared the puck.

Anyway...Robitaille went on-and-on about his two minute shift and how it was unacceptable. Did he forget that there were four other players on the ice for the same ammount of time? It was pretty obvious that the argument was about something specific to the play and not the long shift because they never had a chance to get off the ice. Lindy Ruff did clarify after the game that he wanted him to be smarter with the puck at the end of the shift.

The tough thing about these all-star games is that, not only do you have to hope no one gets injured, but there's also the problem of call ups to consider. Claude Giroux just torched the AHL in his first pro season with 17 goals in 31 games and is now up with the Flyers, perhaps permanently given their injury woes.

At least they don't have to worry about Captain Helmer missing the game. (Great character guy. Was good to see him get some time in the NHL with the Caps as part of his swan song.)

Three Milwaukee players here, all Nashville picks in the midrounds. Franson's a great example of the depth the Predators have on defence now; he's only 21, big and skilled and would be in the NHL with most franchises. (Not bad for a third rounder.)

Purcell looks like a really good NHLer, someone we'll see play a role with the Kings when they're climbing the standings a year or two from now. He probably misses this game, too.

Boychuk leads AHL defencemen in scoring for the Baby Bruins, and I bet the Avs are kicking themselves for dumping him this summer.

And looking at the goalies, I wonder if the Sens will give Elliott a shot in goal if Gerber and Auld continue to struggle. (And in case you're wondering, Mike Brodeur is a distant cousin of Marty. He started the season in the ECHL and has been very good for Rochester in a dozen games so far.)

Vote for Rory paid off! The plucky defenceman gets the captain's 'C' while playing for his hometown Americans despite having a pretty pedestrian season so far.

Aucoin's another veteran worth pointing out: a 5-foot-9 30-year-old playing for one of the best teams in the league, he leads the AHL in scoring by a mile with 48 points in 34 games despite missing some time while playing three games with the Capitals in the NHL.

Filatov's with Columbus at the moment, so his participation's in doubt.

Karsums is a talented young Latvian who I saw at the world juniors quite a bit when they rolled through B.C. two years ago. He's eighth in league scoring and should see time with the big-league Bruins in the near future.

Weber looks like another good one for the Habs, too, who also have P.K. Subban on the way on the blueline.

Kindl... don't tell me you're suprised the Red Wings have another European stud coming on the blueline.

Speaking of Detroit and potential gems, so much for Jimmy Howard as the goalie of the future: Sweden's Danny Larsson has outplayed him by a mile and makes the team here. He was a late third-round pick in 2006.
