Huge night on the scoresheet for Nathan Horton (3g, 1a) as the Cats roll at Nassau Coliseum. Eleven Panthers gained at least a point, while Tomas Vokoun stopped 30 shots to gain the win.

Panthers forwards: is this it?

A quick peek at the NHL Stats Page is all a Cats fan requires to sink into a further funk, even on the heels of a well-executed game in Pittsburgh Saturday night. Of course, the result was all too familiar...

Individually, some Panthers are finally producing what's been expected of them for some time: as has been widely reported, forwards Stephen Weiss and Nathan Horton - whipping boys of the highest order in Sunrise - have 20 and 19 points in the same number of games played, respectively. Who among the faithful are anything less than giddy over what these two have done to reverse their sagging fortunes? There are a lot of beaming Fantasy Hockey owners who gambled in their drafts...and won big.

Beyond those two, the year has been an offensive washout: Michael Frolik's two goals on Friday (his first since November 30th) give him nine on the season. Much-heralded "second-line center" (the organization's words) Steven Reinprecht has scored once in twelve games. Radek Dvorak (who has indeed wratcheted up the intensity this season) hasn't seen the back of a net in nine.

Who else among the forwards have any true offensive expectations on the shoulders? Rostislav Olesz and his 14 points? Teased year after year, we know better. Gregory Campbell or Kamil Kreps, who are a combined -13? "Suitcase" Shawn Matthias? Or perhaps faceoff whizz Dominic Moore, who - by no fault of his own - has an unfortunate habit of getting hurt. A lot.

"But Whale! But Whale! What of David Booth and Cory Stillman? Where would the Cats be with them in the lineup?"

Undoubtedly leading the Eastern Conference in every major category.

What's it matter? They're not here now and probably won't be for some time. Based upon the little we've heard through the Panthers grapevine, it's entirely conceivable Booth won't return at all this season. Concussions tend to be nasty and unpredictable, and this one - his first - is no different. At least we know whom to hate when the postseason fires up.

Stillman is shooting for a late-December rollout, but realistically let's guess mid-January. I love and miss Stiller's hustle, leadership, and contributions as much as the next fan, but if you're hanging Florida's playoff fortunes on the return of a winger who celebrates his 36th birthday in a week, I've got some ProSet hockey cards from 1992 up for sale that are due to explode in value soon. Soon.

The Jackets have had some time-three full days in fact-to regoup and, as I've said here many times before, right the ship. The team is coming off of two bad losses to the Leafs and Avalanche, two teams the Jackets need to beat. Tonight the Panthers come to town, and this being an out-of-conference matchup it is important to pick up these points. The Jackets have historically played well against the East, and that needs to continue this evening.

Dorsett makes his return to the lineup tonight-the team has missed his energy and forechecking badly. He brings a spark to the team that was obviously missing while he was out with a concussion. This is Murray's second game of the season, and I look for him to have a strong game. The lines have been adjusted quite significantly outside of the top line, with Umby sliding back to center with Jake and Chimmer. Chimmer has been playing very well lately, and I'm hopeful he can build on that given the chance to play with some skilled linemates.

Mase returns to the net, he simply must focus on the game and avoid letting in bad goals. The defense as a whole needs to continue to impove, and if the team continues to avoid playing the style the coaching staff is preaching, the ugly losses will continue to mount. If a team tries to play a skill game, without having the necessary skill to back it up, that's when you can kiss the season good-bye.

The Panthers have some skilled forwards and a decent defense, not to mention Vokoun is a fantastic goaltender. This will be a tough matchup, but one the Jackets can defeat. As far as I'm concerned, this is a must-win. In fact, you can say that about all of the games remaining this month. If they can go on a decent winning streak, they are right back in it.

Rule of thumb: He who forechecks, wins. The Blue Jackets have struggled against speedy forechecks this season, and they haven't established much of one lately, either. All that's left for the Panthers from three blockbuster trades (Roberto Luongo, Olli Jokinen and Jay Bouwmeester) are defensemen Keith Ballard, Jordan Leopold and Bryan Allen.

Buffalo. Detroit. New York. Done, done, and done. Six points of six possible. Good stuff from a club not long ago mired in a hellish 2-8 pit of despair. Now sitting a lot prettier at 10-9-2, the Cats are surprising opponents, and themselves. Tomas Vokoun's 32 saves allowed for Nathan Horton's game winner in the third to hold off a mad final period by New York. 22 Points.

Notes:

Who led Florida in SOG? Kamil Kreps (1a, +1) with four. League Good Guy Sean Avery paced the Rags with five(??). Steven Reinprecht and Jordan Leopold also scored for the Panthers, while Vinny Prospal and Marian Gaborik kept the Ranger close. Bryan McCabe (3 shots) led all skaters with 24:12 TOI. Stephen Weiss had one assist, but his efforts throughout the night told another story: the guy was simply everywhere, winning faceoffs, setting up plays, showing how it's (supposed to be) done. Impressive, and we're seeing this more and more from him. New York forward Ryan Callahan is a wrecking ball. Ville Koistinen returned to the lineup, but his team-low 4:37 doesn't bode well for his future with Coach Pete's club. Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped 25 shots. Next up: Pittsburgh on Monday...all hail the third jersey.

Factoring only offensive numbers, outside of The Line - a forced but effective amalgamation starring C Steven Reinprecht, RW Nathan Horton, and LW Cory Stillman - few Cats have produced on a consistent basis, if at all.

There have of course been a number of encouraging individual efforts; Rostislav Olesz and his club-leading 53 SOG, Radek Dvorak's two shorties, Tomas Vokoun's 3 shutouts in four wins, the rapid emergence of Dmitry Kulikov into a known positive commodity on the blueline, Kamil Kreps and his +2 (seriously...it's tied for the team lead).

The relative long-term loss of last year's hero LW David Booth has unquestionably hit the offense hard, though his numbers prior to Dr. Mike Richards' outpatient spinal rearrangement were not entirely sparkling (9gp, 3p, -5) for a player many (fairly or otherwise) hinged the outcome of this season upon.

In any case, here are three Cats who must dial it up; players whom the club - a forward, defenseman, and goaltender - will ultimately rely upon to make or break the year.

It'll be another twelve months before the "book" is published, but second-year forward Frolik is on the cusp of gaining a reputation as a slow-starter; it was well into November of 2008 before he truly grew wings, and that may again be the case. A sophomore slump from a player who banged home 21 goals the previous year simply cannot be tolerated if a postseason spot is the collective goal. Frolik at the very least must finish with 45 points or greater, and he ain't on that pace.

Though his club is shooting blanks from just about every position, the surprise stat of the year may in fact be defenseman Ballard's 3 points in 16 games. After the departure of Jay Bouwmeester, it could have been safely assumed that Keith would be assured of top "D"-line offensive numbers; who was going to eclipse him, outside of Bryan McCabe? The additions of Dennis Seidenberg (Randy Sexton's move of the year?), Jordan Leopold, a healthy Bryan Allen, and that Kulikov kid have made life tough for #2. Even Allen has a goal. Ballard's far too important to the club to wallow in the basement. He may not yet be in Peter DeBoer's doghouse, but he's got a paw on the doorbell.

We're in Year Three of the Vokoun Era (which translates simply to"Love him - hate him, love him - hate him"), but only the second month of 1-B netminder Clemmensen, whose 2-1 record looks decent on the surface, but look a bit further to the right and horror rains down from the heavens. Right or wrong for "commenting" on his team's deficiencies in the defensive zone, it's only fair to give the guy a rider during his initial break-in period. Arriving from a Devils club who allowed an average of 29.5 shots on goal while playing a deeply-ingrained defensive-reponsibility-at-all-costs style, "Clemmer" is adapting to a Florida club which opens the floodgates for 35.4(!). No matter, he's got to be there when called upon. Success can't be had without relief for the number one.

Just a quick link-check from the infirmary...

The newest of member of the Cats' wounded list is gritty Gregory Campbell, who received a puck to the face courtesy of Brian Pothier in last night's loss to Washington. Coach Pete DeBoer referred to the injury as a "significant cut" and held a stitched Soup from the third period (which no doubt benefitted Campbell's plus-minus for the evening). Given the Panthers don't play again until Thursday it would seem doubtful he'll miss any time, barring further undisclosed damage.

As of Friday, winger David Booth remained planted on an exercise bike, though for no more than 10 minute stretches. Sayeth The Dood: "This is the longest I've ever gone without doing anything. I don't like it, but it is part of the process and you have to stick with the program." Various reports have his concussion-related symptoms retreating, but the Cats are taking absolutely no chances with their star forward.

Did you know Dominic Moore's brother is an author? No, not that brother. Meanwhile, nothing new from Dom, who still wasn't skating through Thursday following nasal surgery.

Penalty-killing-guru Radek Dvorak found his way to the ice on Friday - and skated on it. Great news for a guy who just two weeks ago suffered an MCL tear. Shoot for a potential return to the lineup Thursday, says the Sun-Sentinel. Pointless trivia: Booth, Moore, and Dvorak all sustained their issues in the infamous Philadelphia fiasco.

Forward Kamil Kreps skipped the Washington trip altogether with a "bruised foot" (is that better or worse than a "lower body injury"?) but also hopes for a Thursday return.

Remember Nick Tarnasky? Neither do we, but the left wing remains out with a busted orbital bone sustained in a preseason fight with Ottawa's Chris Neil. Looks to be quite a while longer, according to DeBoer several weeks ago.

Back-to-back losses to the Capitals - by a combined score of 11-5 - undoubtedly has the Panthers, if not their fans - reeling and looking for answers.

The old Shots For/Shots Against demon is certainly one area to focus on, though it is far from surprising: after 15 games, the Cats are averaging a 24th "best" 28.1 Shots-For while allowing an average of 35.1 Shots-Against, good for worst in the NHL. Again, nothing new here, but a seven-shot differential is scary, and not an efficient way to win games, much less remain competitive.

Obviously their goals-per-game numbers suffer as (one) direct result: on average, Florida is scoring 2.53 goals while allowing 3.60 (21st and tied for 29th with Toronto for last in the league, respectively).

While we're at it, lets look at some individual stats, in relation to the above numbers. Among those who have played at least thirteen games, here is your All-Bust plus-minus lineup:

Frightening. Yes, arguments could - and will - be made demanding exceptions for a few of these: Allen is returning from a year away, Uberkinder Kulikov is playing his first season out of juniors, etc. But wins typically come on the efforts of The Collective, and collectively they've sucked.

By the way, your current plus-minus "Kings" are Kamil Kreps, Dennis Seidenberg, and Steven Reinprecht: congrats on the plus-2, boys!

What about goaltending? In a word: brutal. Fairly omitting Alexander Salak's 18-minute relief effort in the first week, Tomas Vokoun and Scott Clemmensen are carrying numbers far more at home in the high-scoring 1980s:

Not cool. Not entirely their faults, of course, but neither has managed to make the Big Saves or carry the club to victory. And forget doing either of those on a consistent basis...it ain't happening at all.

Injuries have been sustained, lines were shuffled, call-ups made from Rochester (who's been killing the AHL for weeks), and it's the same old tired result. Has Pete DeBoer his a brick wall, or is this simply part of the learning curve for a young coach? Does Randy Sexton actually have any authority to spend money as he (responsibly) pleases? And where are the veterans, supposedly employed to lead the way for da youts? How about Captain Bryan McCabe and alternates Cory Stillman and Weiss?

Suggestions?

As would be expected following the loss of two crucial contributors (David Booth's 31 goals last season and Radek Dvorak's two shorties so far in the current year), coach Pete DeBoer has no choice but to rock his listing boat.

Forwards Kenndal McArdle and Michal Repik join the club from Rochester, making the act of following tomorrow night's action an exercise in confusion, at least initially.

I'm completely intrigued by the last line: Kreps-McArdle-Koistinen certainly represents three different hockey philosophies which should be a blast to watch. Moore centering Campbell and Repik could be a lot of fun as well. Rhino sandwiched between Stiller and Horts could go in any direction - hopefully up - but I'm saving the uber-stokedness reaction for the second trio. Weiss, Frolik, and Rusty hold some potential in my eyes. Neither winger has had a true number-one center for any extended period in their (admittedly short) NHL careers; this may be kewl to watch.

In any case, the Cats are without their number-one LW along with the club's penalty-killing guru. Each and every member of the team is gonna have to dig deep.

Sabres Start Fast, Hang on to Beat Panthers

The way to regroup from a disappointing home loss is to get off to a fast start in your next game. The Buffalo Sabres did just that against the Florida Panthers, scoring five times in the first period en route to a 5-2 victory against the Florida Panthers.

Mike Grier started the scoring for the Sabres with a wrist shot through the legs of Florida goalie Scott Clemmensen just 1:11 after the opening faceoff. Kamil Kreps found himself in the penalty box for hooking just 16 seconds later and Jason Pominville scored the Sabres second goal 29 seconds later. Just like that the Sabres had a 2-0 lead before the game was two minutes old.

Noticing that his team needed a spark, Florida coach Pete Deboar quickly pulled Scott Clemmensen in favor of Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun didn't fare much better against the Sabres offensive explosion. Matt Ellis scored his first of the season and Tyler Myers netted his second just past the halfway point of the first period.

Give the Panthers credit because they never gave up in this game. They beat Miller for the first time f the evening with just under six minutes left in the first. There was at least a thought the Panthers could come back at that point but Thomas Vanek was credited with the Sabres fifth goal just about two minutes later.

The Sabres took their 5-1 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes and they never really looked back. They looked sloppy the rest of the way but Ryan Miller came up with big save after big save. The Panthers finally beat him again with less than five minutes left in the game to make the final score 5-2.

Fast Start a Welcome Change

After the way the Sabres started against the Thrashers, they needed to have a fast start on Wednesday against the Florida Panthers. Nobody could have predicted what happened in the first period in that game. Buffalo exploded for five goals by five different players and four of them were at even strength.

The Sabres have scored four first period goals in their first six games before they had their five goal outburst against Florida. It was reminiscent of the second period explosion last week against the Red Wings. The Sabres have now scored 19 goals in last four games after starting the season with four goals in their first three games.

Secondary Scoring Continues

The Sabres scored three goals in the first five minutes of the game tonight. One goal was scored on the power play but the other two were scored by the third and fourth lines. Mie Grier started the scoring just over a minute into the game and Matt Ellis scored on a backhander just before the five minute mark of the game.

We often hear about secondary scoring when referring to the elite teams in the NHL and the Sabres seem to be getting that secondary scoring.

Miller for Vezina?

While it's too early to start awarding the season ending trophies, it's hard to ignore the play of Ryan Miller. Miller was outstanding again tonight although it was overshadowed by the Sabres five goal first period outburst. Miller made 41 saves in the win and many of them were spectacular. The Panthers outshot the Sabres 41-36 and that is after Buffalo jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the early going. Too many penalties led to Miller having to be spectacular to get the win.

The last two Sabres wins were the direct result of great goaltending from Ryan Miller. The Sabres gave up plenty of opportunities in the win Friday and again in this win. It is a trend that will have to be fixed quickly if the Sabres want to succeed. Miller can't be asked to make this many saves every night or he will certainly become fatigued at some point.

Skimming the "stats" section of the NHL's official website, and thought I'd share a couple of thoughts on how the Panthers are doing after six games...on paper. The term "It's Early" has been used in multiple occassions here at The Box in recent days, for a variety of valid reasons, but numbers are always fun to dissect, and besides: we have only a day left to fill before the next game.

Of course, the plus/minus haters and shootout assassins will forever hang behind the walls they erect, but the two are a part of the game - like it or not - and we're stuck with 'em. Onward.

We'll go stat-by-stat with the relevant stuff and see where the Cats stand, through yesterday's games). Keep in mind Florida has only played six games (it won't help your mood, but it's a fact).

GOALS: better sit down for this...not a single Panther within the top 30. Olli Jokinen isn't there either, so chew on that. NHL LEADER: Alexander Ovechkin, WAS, 9. FLA LEADER: Four tied with 2 (~~Booth,~~ Radek Dvorak, Stephen Weiss, Nathan Horton, Michael Frolik).
ASSISTS: again, no one from Sunrise here as well, thugh it wasn't exactly expected that one of them would be. NHL LEADER: Joe Thornton, SJS, 12. FLA LEADER: Dmitry Kulikov (!), with 3.
POINTS: really looking for a desert oasis with this one. NHL LEADER: Ovechkin,16. FLA LEADER: Two tied with 4 (Frolik and Weiss).
PLUS/MINUS: this is where the Carolina Catastrophe rears its head. NHL LEADER: Nicklas Grossman, DAL, +10. FLA LEADER: Kamil Kreps, +3 (at the other end, Bryan Allen and Horton each share a -6, while the league cellar is inhabited by Brendan Witt and Brent Burns, swapping spit with a -9).
PIM: the Cats will never be mistaken - at least during the current regime - for having an overly aggressive demeanor, and that is reflected in their penalty minutes. NHL LEADER: Zenon Kenopka(?), TAM, 38. FLA LEADER: Allen, 13.
SOG: Nothing to be embarrassed about, generally. NHL LEADER: Ovechkin, 61 (second in the league? Gaborik, with 39 - and one more game played). FLA LEADER: Two tied at 21 (Rostislav Olesz and David Booth).
