Habs Perk Up A Bubbling Crude In Loss To Oilers

After being shellacked like a shithouse toilet seat in Vancouver last Wednesday, the Canadiens 3-2 loss in Edmonton represents a slightly more respectable showing for a group desperately in need of finding itself. There are still many wrinkles for Jacques Martin's iron to pass over, but which each passing game, the Canuck debacle notwithstanding, the coach is becoming better acquainted with the sure values on the club.

In terms of optimism, it would seem at a glance that there is not much to get lit up about after five games. The Canadiens two wins in Toronto and Bufalo were robberies of the hot goalie variety, of which they suffered last night at the hands of Nikolai Khabibulin. The play of a select group of players offers quantifiable hope that better days are to come.

Perhaps the best news is that a six game homestand awaits and that the annual western roadtrip - a perennial graveyard of losses for the Habs - is in the books for this season.

Despite the shyish 2-3 record, it is clear that the trio of Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta and Mike Cammalleri - as a line itself, or not - represent the bulk of where the Habs offense will come from. All three, especially Gionta, have shown that they can create and produce sparks. More time together will benefit them, as will the last line change on home ice. As Martin often united the three, almost desperately it seemed, in spite of opponents easily matching their firepower with their top lines, much of what they bring was neutered. These three will clearly have more offer with the line matches working in their favor.

Gionta, for one, has no quit in him. His goal against the Oilers late in the second period kept the Habs hopes alive where another rout might have seemed possible.

Carey Price, with two brilliant performances and a blowout behind him, was only so-so against Edmonton. He needs to be better in close games for the Canadiens to have a chance. Price's body language, during and after goals, tells a story every game and you can be sure coach Martin is taking note. There's an abundance of defeat in his bodily expression, where defiance is clearly needed.

You could see Price almost express disgust with defensemen Jaroslav Spacek on Mike Comrie's first period marker, after the D-man extended his blade to deflect a shot on a play he rushed to get back into. Spacek never touched the puck, but it was close enough to throw Price off. When a goalie's confidence is shaky, such plays annoy. Spacek had pinched in the offensive zone and got caught. A smart move in the Habs end, with Comrie off to the wing, would have been to allow Price to make the save. With a slightly deflated goalie, the Canadiens let up in the second, and 2 of 6 Oilers shots put the game out of reach. Price thankfully settled down by the third, and a comeback was made possible by persistent Habs forwards.

While I have yet to be convinced by the addition of Spacek, Paul Mara looks to be the better signing so far. Mara is offensively capable, defensively reliable, and a textbook example of a player performing within his means. That Mara is doing so in the extenuating circumstances of Andrei Markov's absence is even more appreciable.

Along with sound values such Josh Gorges and Roman Hamrlik on defense, Mara and crew did well to keep a speedy Oilers bunch a 19 shots on goal. In their play, you can see a certain part of Martin's suffocating system of keeping shooters to the sidelines being instilled. Time and cohesion with forward lines can only help this aspect of the Canadiens game improve.

What I love about Gorges is what unerves me about Hal Gill. Gorges is becoming know as a true warrior, one that rarely lets up despite the conditions he's up against. Constantly battling oversized forwards, Gorges wins puck battles and consistently makes the smarter plays because his feet never stop moving. He's insistantly moving, shoving and grinding out checks, poised and planned because he knows what to do with the play and the puck.

Gill on the other hand, seems downright confounded by the plays that confront him. Despite his great reach, each puck at his feet seems to be either too far or too close for him to play with any sign of adeptness. Rarely does he use his reach to play a puck ahead for himself or a teammate. He repeatedly stumbles clumsily to la rondelle, his inept short strides being no help. In all honesty, if both Markov and O'Byrne were available, he'd be riding pine. You could almost predict the moment when Habs fans will begin handing him a rough ride.

After a horrendous game in Vancouver, Yannick Weber was more composed against the Oilers. Still, I worry about the kid's confidence taking a shit kicking playing one level up from where he truly should be at the moment. In the AHL, his timing and poise would be better worked on. In the NHL, his mistakes will often end up in his own goal. It's just another reminder that the transition from junior to pro for an offensive minded defender cannot skip the essential steps.

Are you like me, perhaps wishing to see Tomas Plekanec center Gionta a little more often? The pair seemed to click some in preseason, and the former Devil appeared to be the best option for converting Plekanec's work into scoring chances. As it stands, Plekenec often seems weighted down with lame duck wings Max Pacioretty and Andrei Kostitsyn.

The center, all things considered, is playing strong five on five hockey despite the lack of a foil on his wing. The problem for Martin is this: how does he remove Gionta from Gomez at the moment with such lacklustre showing from both Pacioretty and Kostitsyn?

Pacioretty played some of his best shifts when removed from the second line, as his assets better suit the dirty work provided by third and fourth line duty and tasks. Kostitsyn started a game strong for a change, firing some wicked wristers in the game's opening shifts. After going dead from the neck up and quitting on a few plays he found a permanent seat at the end of the bench for the third period. With Kovalev gone, meet the Habs new enigma. Kostitsyn is many tooled player minus the toolbox, and his obvious detachment and oblivious commitment are starting to become major concerns.

Maxim Lapierre, Guillaume Latendresse and Travis Moen will be a more effective third line once home ice matchups allow them to perform mainly against other third lines. All three have put in too many subtle minutes so far, but the effort seems to have occasional sparks. They need to be placed in a context where they are allowed to go on the offensive more often and get under opponents skins. Thus far, it's been hit and miss, and once their contribution steps up, their addition will be noteworthy.

While he has only dropped the gloves once in five games, Georges Laraque has contributed more in five short games that he had all of last season. Unfortunately, what he's capable of bringing is often hampered by the slow footed Kyle Chipchura, an honest worker not blessed with the quickness his instincts require. Pacioretty makes this duo harder to tangle with, and he clearly reads Chipchura better than the lame Matt D' Agnostini can. The trouble with the latter for Martin is that he clearly suits the needs of centers Gomez and Plekanec better, but the work ethic hardly deserves the promotion to top six forward status.

I was kind of caught off guard by the third period efforts of the occasional Chipchura, Laraque and Pacioretty combo. They kept the tempo up and helped maintain the efforts of the top line suitably well. Pacioretty was surpringly noticeable and creative more than he had been in previous games and just when I began wondering why Martin hadn't shortened the bench while trailing by two goals, the trio were providing some semblence of a suitable answer. Laraque even had me imagining that his first goal as a Hab isn't far off. I can actually envision it almost coming in the approaching homestand. Should I take a poll on this?

One personal regret of mine as the game wore on was that I didn't choose this game to write down all the line combos Martin threw on the ice. Some worked better than others, but the deck was consistently being shuffled in creative ways that clearly kept the Oilers off balance. This is textbook coach work for road games for an old pro like Martin, who clearly has a bank of experience going head to head with counterpart Quinn. The shot totals tell that Martin won much of this battle despite the final tally on the scoreboard.

After scrutinizing the Habs PK woes a day earlier, I was counting 21 seconds each time the kill was deployed, noting which players were out. Puck control off the first draw was much improved, as was the fight for the first loose puck. Plekanec, Moen, Gomez, Gill, Hamrlik and Gorges saw the bulk of PK time, with Gionta, Mara, Lapierre, Chichura and Spacek seing backup duty. I was comforted initially, not seeing Spacek on the first wave.

Judging by his reaction, I'd bet that the Lapierre goal was good. He was directly on top of Khabibulin when he poked the puck beneath him. The trouble was, he's likely the only soul in the building who could have had the proper view. With cameras not able to catch it, a non-goal call had to be made. That's the breaks!

I've held off bitching about the officiating until now. Clearly, it's as bad as it always has been, especially with the tolerance level raised to the rook. With so much let go, the chintzy hooking call on D' Agostini in the first really confounds, as does the lack of calls going the Habs way considering the shots margin. NHL officiating is clearly designed to baffle.

With these five games in the books, we can now get excited about a more promising homestand and the prospect of seeing what this bunch can muster on home ice. Six games in eleven days against Colorado, Ottawa, Atlanta, the Islanders, Rangers and Isles again await.

I'll go out on a limb and call 4 wins!

How Do You Spell Disaster?: Markov Out For Four Months

The Canadiens without Andrei Markov?

We've been down this route before and the results weren't pretty. Last time, the painful reminder of how important Markov is to the Habs lasted a brief but painful four games. This time around it will be four long months.

Disaster I say!

Here is the official announcement from both the NHL.com and Habs official sites.

The Canadiens will be without the services of All-Star defenseman Andrei Markov for the next four months.

The veteran blue-liner left the Habs' first game of the season late in the contest against the Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre.

He underwent surgery on Thursday night in Toronto to repair a lacerated tendon in his ankle. He was released from hospital this morning and will return to Montreal today.

Replacing an All Star defensemen who logs 20+ minutes of icetime is one thing, but Markov has long been they key kog in the Canadiens offence and transition game. En autres mots, he's damn near irreplaceable unless a trade is made.

What might seem at first like a door of opportunity has opened for the likes of Yannick Weber or P.K. Subban, this situation likely represents the worst scenario they could be brought into.

The pressure on either of them to be Markov, would be simply ridiculous.

A trade is most reasonable option. Now let's see, what teams are out of the playoff hunt one game into the season and are prepared to part with a puck moving blueliner.

Want an understatement? This will be a major test of character for the Canadiens, no doubt. Another understantement is this Gazette headline...Markov injury puts pressure on Habs' blueline....in which coach Martin tries to see that the light at the tunnel's end isn't an oncoming train.　

The coach also looked to last year's Stanley Cup champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins, for inspiration. He noted that Sergei Gonchar and Ray Whitney missed most of the season, but were fresh for the Cup run. He also mentioned New Jersey goaltender Marty Brodeur returning fresh after an injury, but Brodeur's post-season play left something to be desired.

What Martin perhaps doesn't bring up, is the firing of coach Michel Therrien to help spark the Penguins down the stretch.

Oh yeah, and Piitsburgh also has a couple of kids named Crosby and Malkin, but that's inconsequencial I guess.

This is just plain bleak!

Why Three French Speaking Players On The Canadiens Isn't Enough

I enjoy jumping into a language qcontroversy concerning the Habs about as much as I like dipping my toe into an acid pool.

I cringe at seeing these types of controversies and distractions concerning the team, and that is why I felt compelled to put all this down.

For the record, I am of course fluently billingual, with no pros or antis either way when it comes to who speaks what. I've always been all for the Canadiens dressing the best possible lineup regardless of tongue.

I have also always been well aware that the club in the market it serves must represent the fanbase with what is often termed the "french element", players who can converse with media and fans alike in their language.

Above all else, I am interested most in sound logic. Equally, I am completely against the often inflammatory french press when it comes to the french element question. Quite often, the nonsense goes way overboard, loses reason and lacks logic.

Since last season, the Canadiens have parted ways with Steve Begin, Patrice Brisebois, Francis Bouilllon, Mathieu Dandenault and Alex Tanguay. In each case, anyone with a sound mind wil agree that each parting had too do with a hockey question. Perhaps in Tanguay's case, renumeration came into play.

The sweeping changes to the culture of the team (and I mean that in a dressing room sense, not language one) have left the club with only three french speaking players on the roster. The number increases to four should Yannick Weber make the cut.

The three reamaining players are Maxim Lapierre, Guillaume Latendresse and Georges Laraque, and all three can expect of busy winter of microphones shoved in their faces, carefully watching every utterance.

Laraque for his part, may or may not factor in much, as it is highly unlikely that even if he is healthy all season, that he dresses for more than 55 games. He's also been a bit difficult with media of late, asking that questions be put to him before answering. Additionally, he's also not the player that will be sought out for a provocative hockey quote.

Can you picture Laraque weighing in with such dandies as, "Our penalty kill has to be better" or "We need a better all around effort and this team needs to start putting the puck in the net?"

My apprehensions are that the weight of the french media's needs will fall squarely on the young shoulders of Lapierre and Latendresse, the latter of which is now the veteran french speaking player on the team.

As players with only two and three seasons respectively under their belts, it is hoped that their focus is applied in full to what they are accomplishing on the ice. The scrum around their stalls upon their better games will not be an issue, but how will it play out after repeated sub par performances?

The last thing these players need, and the team itself, is having their heads already in the post game presser, sorting through reasoning with a game still on the line. It could be motivational in the hands of an assured veteran, and disastrous to someone younger.

The lack of an increase french precense, especially a veteran one, could conceivably become a burden to the only two available french Habs, and younger heads at that. I fear that's a bit of a volatile scenario, one that will be exploited sooner or later.

Another apprehension of mine is the pressure the situation imposes on the non french speaking players on the team. Not only could it evolve into a predictable press mess, it places undue pressure on them in having to answer to things in a disproportionate amount.

When losses arrive, and more pointed questions follow, the insuficient answers offered could breed resentment. Unilingual fans might not get the sense of it, but the questions asked by french media to french players are of a more particular and sometimes provocative nature. The absense, or rather the disappearance of such topical questions will most definitely irk the french crews, who will be simplifying the queries to dullified bathwater, and then translating them back to readers and listeners. Print wise, it is a smaller concern, but television wise, it dilutes the content by having it all repeated back.

The scenario is bound to breed a certain contempt, especially when teams with french player arrive in town - Tampa with all of Lecavalier, St. Louis and now Tanguay come to mind. Viewers will be consistently reminded of who is elsewhere and not on the Canadiens.

You don't think this can get ridiculous at times?

Last season, with seven or eight french players dressed for the Canadiens, I listened through one rant (RSS? CKAC?) after a game against the Islanders in which the commentators deplored the fact that Bruno Gervais was not a Hab. Gervais, at best a fourth D-man on Long Island, would be a Bulldog at best in the Habs scheme of things, yet this nut raved about him, going so far as to suggest he'd belong in the Canadiens' top pairing!

So what can the Habs do about this?

There's the old worn motto that in evaluating talent deemed to be equal, that the Canadiens always opt for the french element. It's a sweet spin, and perhaps only true about 75% of the time. Francois Beauchemin, this past summer comes to mind. maybe the Habs should have placed a slightly higher value on him, but who's to say when such talks aren't privy to all us wannabe flies on the wall.

Can the Habs be accused of somewhat neglecting or ignoring the so called french element?

The Canadiens are often accused of this, but it's practically a surface sentiment. No other NHL club hires french speaking coaches. Montreal is the french coach's proving ground, before moving onto other NHL cities. Presently the Habs bench is quite french, and so is Hamilton's.

The Habs might not draft all the french speaking stars fans and media would wish for, but they make a concerted attempt to. This past summer they certainly didn't ignore calls for Louis Leblanc, their first pick, and in later rounds grabbed Gabriel Dumont from Drummondville. Two years ago, there was a rumble because they had passed up on Angelo Esposito after interviewing the kid three times. So far, time has given the Habs reason on that one.

When opportunities present themselves, the Canadiens have been known to sign junior free agents such as David Desharnais and Philippe Lefebvre, showing the press that they do actually keep an eye on the backyard.

Bob Gainey, has been both criticized and lauded in the french press in regards to the questions brought fourth. As perhaps the most successful unilingual to hit the city and learn the local language, he's earned a measure of respect among the french press. In the past, he has swung for the fence with Daniel Briere, and has taken three swings at Vincent Lecavalier. Today, it would have been nice had he connected, not that missing out was his fault entirely.

What often remedies the whole deal, is a wicked good and winning team. It's as though the whole spiel gets distracted by entertainment for a spell.

The simple truth is, the french element question does not go away, and isn't about to anytime soon.

For the disproportionate ratio of french to english speaking Habs currently looking at this about-to-be-sprung trap, it is hoped that a french talent or two becomes available in the not too distant future.

It might just lessen the load.

Habs Final Roster Cuts Coming Soon

Update, Sept. 27, 8:00 p.m.: The Canadiens have announced that Sergei Kostitsyn has been sent to the Hamilton Bulldogs.

In the coming days, the Canadiens roster will be pared down to a maximum 23 player limit. There are currently 31 players on the Habs preseason roster, including regulars, prospects, and injured players, meaning a minimum eight players will be assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs by Wednesday.

There are 19 regulars on the club who will start the season in Montreal and they include goalies Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak, defensemen Ryan O' Byrne, Jaroslav Spacek, Paul Mara, Josh Gorges, Roman Hamrlik, Hal Gill, Andrei Markov, forwards Mike Cammalleri, Tomas Plekanec, Glen Metropolit, Georges Laraque, Brian Gionta, Travis Moen, Maxim Lapierre, Andrei Kostitsyn, Guillaume Latendresse and Scott Gomez.

Twelve players yet to be assured of a roster spot include goalie Curtis Sanford, defensemen Yannick Weber, Mathieu Carle, and Alex Henry, and forwards Kyle Chipchura, Matt D' Agostini, Ben Maxwell, Max Pacioretty, Gregory Stewart, Sergei Kostitsyn, Tom Pyatt, and Olivier Fortier.

Of this dozen, Chipchura, Fortier, Pyatt and Henry are currently injured with Henry actually with the Bulldogs oranization in Scotland.

Of the eight left, it is assumed that Sanford, Weber, Carle and Maxwell will be returned to Hamilton with D' Agostini, Pacioretty, Stewart and Kostitsyn likely sticking with the team. If that is the case, the team would be opting to carry 3 additional forwards rather than eight defensemen, a luxury it might not afford itself, seeing as rearguards Paul Mara and Roman Hamrlik have been injured during camp and are yet to be declared 100% healthy.

Should the team opt to keep Weber on the roster come Thursday, one of the four forwards would be sent to Hamilton unless a player is placed on the injured list. The sticking point could be forward Georges Laraque, who, despite not appearing in preseason games is said to be ready to go on October 1. If Laraque is deemed unfit by then, all four remaining forwards are safe. If he is set to dress, one of Pacioretty or Kostitsyn would be demoted, as both Stewart and D' Agostini would have to clear waivers in the event they are sent down.

By all appearances, Pacioretty will stick with the big club, as he has seemed to have earned his spot. Kostitsyn's performances have been less convincing, and he has (according to Habs World) 39 NHL games left before his status become exempt. Unfortunately for the younger sibling, that fact does not work in his favor at this point, and unless a transaction to clear the logjam at forward is envisioned, he may be Hamilton bound to start the season.

Further complicating issues regarding defensemen has been the play of rearguard Ryan O'Byrne, initially seen as the club's seventh D-man. O' Byrne has been surprisingly solid this camp, and has outperformed both Gill and Mara. As the only right handed shot among the seven, O'Byrne chances of becoming a regular a very good. Weber and Carle are also right handed shots.

Chipchura's scenario also represents a hurdle for the club. No longer on an entry level contract, he would have to clear waivers to pass to Hamilton. He is safe should his return from injury coincide with another injury on the club, but if all players are heathy decisions will have to be made. He can be assigned to Hamilton on injury rehab for up to two weeks if such a scenario arises.

5 Games In 5 Nights: The Good, Bad and Ugly

After five exhibition games, four of which were televised, the Canadiens pre-season record now stands at 3-2. Thus far, it can be stated that Bob Gainey's summertime shopping was a success, but because of the nature of what training camp is all about, much of what we are seeing is inconclusive in terms of other players in the organization and how everything fits together.

After last night's date with the Penguins, 19 players have been cut and sent to Hamilton. They are goalies Robert Mayer and Cedric Desjardins, defensemen Chad Anderson, Andre Benoit, Michael Busto, P.K. Subban, Shawn Belle, Frederick St. Denis, and forwards Ryan White J.T. Wyman, Dany Masse, David Desharnais, Brock Trotter, Mikael Johansson, Ryan Russell, Andrew Conboy, Mike Glumac, Eric Neilson and Mathieu Darche.

There are few surprises in the group, with some people suggesting that perhaps Subban would have gotten a longer look.

Desharnais is one player who turned some heads. The shifty but diminitive center is a jitterbug of energy, and is one player coming from far who just might carve himself an NHL career one day soon.

Neilson earned himself a third game with his pugnacity in the games against Ottawa, but was returned immediately following the Penguins game.

There remains 31 players in camp, six of whom are nursing injuries. The walking wounded are Roman Hamrlik, Kyle Chipchura, Georges Laraque, Paul Mara, Olivier Fortier and Alex Henry.

It will be very interesting to see if further cuts are made on Tuesday and the group is pared down some more for the final stretch of camp.

For now, it just seems that there are way too many players in camp for starters. For myself, there were just too many kids in town without a chance at making the team. Sorting the contenders from the pretenders after watching three or four games games gets a little nauseating. What it amounts to is having the Hamilton camp in Montreal for those concerned, which is even more odd considering that Bulldogs jet off to Scotland to begin camp on Wednesday.

The trouble is, the five game in five nights neccessitates having two squads worth of bodies around.

Still in camp, and hoping to make the final cuts are Max Pacioretty, Sergei Kostitsyn, Yannick Weber, Ben Maxwell, Gregory Stewart and longshots Mathieu Carle, Tom Pyatt and goalie Curtis Sandford

Here are some random thoughts from games played over the last five nights.

The Panthers game showed some promise, especially in terms of the known quantities. The two Ottawa games were a mess at times, and the third period against the Bruins in Quebec on Sunday restored some hope regarding some players having slow starts. The Penguins game, despite the heady opposition of Sidney Crosby and company, should have been, and was, the Canadiens most consistent effort so far.

It appears that Scott Gomez is up to the challenge of conquering the Hab faithful. Ditto Mike Cammalleri. The pair, along with Pacioretty (he'll make the cut!) or Andrei Kostitsyn will form a killer top line many nights. The newcomers looked primed and anxious to please in all their appearances.

Kostitsyn looks like he hasn't had hockey on the brain in almost six months. The synchro is slow, but the shot's still there. When this trio works out the kinks, it'll be a thing of beauty.

There's definitely something good happening between Tomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta. Pleks looks rekindled at times, and Gionta's speed creates option he did not have before.

Former Habs coach turned media mouthpiece, Jacques Demers, is calling for Gionta as captain. I can't come up with an argument against that notion. He's been far and away the most electrifying player in camp. That alone, isn't enough, but Jacques Martin, who will make the choice, was launding Gionta's leadership merits before the ex games began.

The jury will be out on Guillaume Latendresse for awhile more, as unfairly as it has ever been. His skating is no longer the main concern in my eyes. Playing as a possible top six forward, his timing is now under scrutiny. His speed is sufficient to allow his physical game to become dominant, but his reaction time in joining the scoring opportunities his hits help create still needs improvement. He's coming along though, and there has been obvious improvement in the three games he's played. Scoring against Pittsburgh will take some heat off, at least until the next game.

Some other vets have been, shall we say, invisible?

Maybe I'm overreacting some here. Like, it has been all of what, 10 days into camp?

Max Lapierre, wheverer you are, bring back Gregory Stewart and Matt D' Agostini, and send a search party out the chilled water bucket Andrei dips his head in between shifts. While it is only pre-season, my gut tells me one of Stewart, Dags or Sergei don't finish the season in Montreal.

You gotta like the reach on Hal Gill, but he's soft when he should be rough. His nickname might just become the "Gentle Giant." So far, Ryan O' Byrne is stealing his job.

O' Byrne hardly looks like last season's occasional basket case. He's been sturdy and dependable in games, and nasty when he's needed to be.

Nice to see Sergei Kostitsyn back playing. Nice to see the edge is there too, although bowling over that Bruins player the other night just looked outright dumb.

In a team scheme, I don't yet see alot of playing of Martin's system just yet. I see a whole lot of hesitation and trepidation from usure roles. One thing that is evident though, is that the new look Habs break out at blazing speed. The trio of Gomez, Gionta and Cammalleri especially, come back into their zone with the same thrust they leave with.

Carey Price, finally, resembled a goalie we can all have faith in against Pittsburgh. He would have been my third star last night, after Gionta and Markov.

A final thought on some of the kids. In a roundup of the whole Bulldogs bound crew, there's almost a half dozen players that could be stamped without doubt as future NHLers. Not counting Max Pac, Weber, Sergei and others already considered to have made the jump, there are P.K., Ben Maxwell, Ryan White, Desharnais and Trotter. A pretty good crop, considering the most talented prospects might just be the junior aged kids not attending camp.

Who Will Be The Surprise Of This Canadiens Camp?

Every once in a while, a training camp produces a surprise performance or two, that scuttles an organization's plans and forces the team to consider alterations to it's pencilled in 23 man roster

The Canadiens current NHL roster consists of 22 one-way contracts that include two goaltenders, seven defenseman and 13 forwards. The list does not include forwards Max Pacioretty and defenseman Yannick Weber, both of whom played games with the Canadiens last season, but are on two-way deals that allow them to be shuttled to Hamilton without needing to clear waivers.

Several seasons ago it was Mike Ribeiro who played his way onto the club after a surpring camp, Guillaume Latendresse made a strong impression at age 18, cracking the lineup one camp later after another solid showing. Two seasons ago, Sergei Kostitsyn turned heads, and was quickly recalled from Hamilton two months into the season.

Consensus this season, is that the final available spot is Pacioretty's to lose, but it would be unlikely that the Canadiens keep the big winger in Montreal if he is not be a regular member of the starting 12 forwards. As the club would prefer to give the youngster as much grooming time as needed, Pacioretty's fate may well depend on whether he gels with linemates in camp and can become regularly productive. Projected as a top - 6 forward, it will do Pacioretty little good to toil alongside fourth liners in Montreal. One full season removed from the University ranks, the kid simply has to play to develop.

Where available forward spots could open up invlove the projected use of tough guys on the team. While it is doubtful that the Canadiens will dress all of Travis Moen, Georges Laraque and Gregory Stewart in a particular game, two of the three will more than likely be in the lineup on a platoon basis, seeing action alongside fourth line pivot Glen Metropolit.

The Canadiens depth chart dicates that Scott Gomez, Mike Cammalleri, Brian Gionta, Andrei Kostitsyn and Tomas Plekanec are the club's top five forwards. Latendresse and Maxim Lapierre are pegged for the third line, leaving the younger Kostitsyn and Matt D' Agostini to sort the roles of second and third line wingers.

Latendresse, as well as Pacioretty, could be an eventual second line fit, with camp helping determine where the cards fall. Pre-season injuries could also be a factor in determining the opening night lineup October 1.

As it stands, other than Pacioretty, there are six candidates that could cause a surprise at this point and they include Weber, defenseman P.K. Subban, centers Kyle Chipchura and Ben Maxwell, forward Mikael Johansson, and depth goaltender Curtis Sanford.

Sanford would be deemed a long shot to making the club, as it is assumed that goaltender Jaroslav Halak's job is not in play. That Halak would not clear waivers makes the scenario practically moot, outside of an injury situation.

Weber is seen as the team's eighth blueliner, presently ranked behind Ryan O' Byrne and earmarked for Hamilton for another season of professional grooming. His offensive upside will make him an alluring option as a callup in light of injuries, but his game shares similarities with prospect Subban. While Weber is one year Subban's senior, his physical game may not be as mature. Where these two fit in the organizational scheme could play out at this camp, with the one gaining the edge becoming one step closer to the big club.

A similar scenario will play out between centers Chipchura and Maxwell, if not at this camp, then very soon into the season. Chipchura has an NHL contract, but is far from a sure bet for the big club. The Canadiens were very pleased with Maxwell's first professional season, and it is he who is expected to lead the Bulldogs offensively this season. Should he excel and a top line center go down to injury, Maxwell could get the call ahead of Chipchura. This was the case last season, when Maxwell was called up and used primarily in a defensive mode. Several opinions suggest that the likable Chipchura is playing his future with the Canadiens at this camp, and his performances will be closely scrutinized.

Lastly, and perhaps under the radar some, is Johansson, a solid two way player with Farjestatads BK Karlstad the past four seasons. A former Red Wings draft choice in 2003 and signed by Montreal as a free agent this off-season, Johansson was promised a shot at the big club by the Canadiens. While players from European leagues are perhaps the hardest to gauge in regards to being NHL calibre, it has been said that Johansson fits the prototype Jacques Martin responsible forward model, much in the manner of Andreas Dackell. He may not look out of place with Sergei Kostitsyn on a Metropolit centered defensive trio.

While it appears unlikely that major surprises are in the works at this Canadiens camp, several players are jostling for position on the bubble. How they play against other pros in exhibition games could go a long way towards determining how soon we them in Montreal.

Habs Rookie Camp Officially Kicks Off 2009-10 Season

Finally!

Was it just me, or did this seem like the longest off season ever?

Be it what it was, it was anything but dull considering the overhaul the club went through.

On Monday, the rookies were the first to hit the ice for scrimmages in Brossard, followed by a group of veterans who worked out in the afternoon, getting ready for the big camp later this week.

I'd have loved to have there checking it all out. For now, here's a scoop of news found from various sources, of which I will link to or provide translations for.

RDS speaks with Pacioretty, Subban and Weber, prior to them hitting the ice.

Pacioretty, the player with the most NHL game experience, discusses his chances of making the grade this year.

"To be honest, I've had trouble sleeping the past two weeks because I spend two hours a night laying there thinking about getting a spot on the team. If I get one, it will because I have earned it. If not, I'll just have to work harder to get there one day."

It is often cited that P.K. Subban and Yannick Weber are the two closest defensemen in the organization to the NHL. While Weber has six games NHL experience, it looks as thought both are heading to Hamilton for further grooming. Based on the numbers in Montreal, they would be eighth and ninth on the organizational depth chart.

"There have been so many changes on the team, not to mention the coach", says Weber. "It presents a new opportunity for me. I just have to work hard and fight for a job."

For Subban, the upcoming season will be his first at the pro level, after four illustrious campaigns with the Belleville Bulls.

"I've worked extremely hard this summer to remain in shape to play at this level. Training camp serves to prove whether we are this calibre. I'll make the best of this occasion."

Subban was asked if the acquisition of defensemen Hal Gill and Paul Mara were seen as hurting his chances of perhaps making the grade as the team's seventh defenseman.

"All that is in my control, is that I am ready to play here. The Canadiens are my favorite team, so I undertsand that these acquisitions are for the betterment of the team. This team will enjoy success, so I'm not worrying about those things much."

Weber's take on the question is similar.

"It's good for the organization that it adds players such as Hal Gill, who has won a Stanley Cup. I'm still young and it's normal that the team looks to add experienced defenseman. I'm in the same situation I was in last year. I have to work hard and wait for my chance."

Centreman Ben Maxwell is also in the picture, he who had a strong first pro campaign in Hamilton in 2008-09.

"I'm hoping to make the club, and it won't be easy with the players ahead of me. It wouldn't both me to play on the wing."

Shortly after noon, 16 veterans on the team took the ice, including Gill, Scott Gomez, Jaroslav Spacek, Travis Moen and Mike Cammalleri. The official training camp begins Saturday, with the first weigh in and medicals taking place. Others on hand included Roman Hamrlik, Maxim Lapierre, Guillaume Latendresse, Sergei Kostitsyn, Georges Laraque, Glen Metropolit, Shawn Belle, Matt D' Agostini, Gregory Stewart and Jaroslav Halak.

Of 29 rookies invited to take part, 27 were on the ice while the injured Dany Massé and Gabriel Dumont were on hand for rehabilitation purposes.　

The players by position are goaltenders Cédrick Desjardins, Robert Mayer, Jason Missiaen, and Petteri Simila; defensemen Chad Anderson, Mac Bennett, André Benoit, Michael Busto, Mathieu Carle, Frédérick St-Denis, Joe Stejskal, P.K. Subban and Yannick Weber; centers David Desharnais, Olivier Fortier, Mikael Johansson, Benjamin Maxwell, Tom Pyatt, Ryan Russell, Dustin Walsh and Ryan White; right wings Eric Nielson and J.T. Wyman; and left wings Andrew Conboy, Max Pacioretty, and Brock Trotter. Left winger Philippe Lefebvre of the QMJHL Drummondville Voltigeurs was the lone camp player on a tryout.

Fans Fill Brossard For Opening Of Camp - La Presse

Assistant coach Kirk Muller put 27 rookies through the paces in what is described as a high intensity for day of camp. Players hoping to receive an invite to the main camp were doing their best to grab attention starting on day one.

For P.K Subban, who is now into his third camp with the Canadiens, making a good first impression is not everything.

"I think everybody wants to look good right off the start, but you can't spend all your energy on day one. It has to be managed. After this camp, there is still the main camp and exhibition games to play."

For Yannick Weber, the enthusiam of the first day has all to do with the desire to get going.

"It's the first day, so everyone's anxious to hit the ice. Of course, the first day is no picnic. Everyone has to play hard if they want to play in Montreal or hamilton next season."

The most in demand player, media wise, on the day, was winger Max Pacioretty, who dressed in 34 games with Montreal last season. One question directed to him asked if he felt he had a job to lose.

"I'm not looking at things from that angle. I think that I can be a part of this team if I give the best of myself. If I do, I'll make the team."

Pacioretty also noted that he worked hard during the summer months, to add muscle to his frame.

"I have good size and I want to be able to use it. I want to prove to the coaches that not only can I score, but that I also bring a physical presence."

The 21 year old American was one player helping set the tone on this first day, particularly against Subban.

It's important for me to prove that I am ready, right now. Each time I'm on the ice, I want to be the best out there. If someone wants to compete against me, that's even better. P.K. is a competitor, and having to go up against a player such as him is motivating."

Mathieu Carle hopes to avoid the infirmary and make himself worthy - La Presse

Habs prospect Carle has had his two camps cut short the last two seasons. In 2007, he injured his knee in an exhibition game against Pittsburgh and last season he was kayoed by the Red Wings Tomas Kopecky. This time out, he hopes fate is much different.

"I'm not even going near the infirmary", Carle says with a laugh. "Actually, it's not on my mind constantly. It's in the past. It's a new training camp and I'm in great shape. I'm hoping to make a name for myself and get past the first shift of an exhibition game."

Asked if he feels he hasn't been afforded the opportunity to do himself justice thus far, Carle responds affirmatively.

"Certainly, because I've yet to play a full game since my first camp at 18 years old. It wouldn't be a disaster to start the season in Hamilton. I'm only 21, and alot of things can happen over the course of a season."

10 Things We'd Like To See Happen On The 2009-10 Canadiens

Here is a random list of good happenings, which, should at least seven occur, the Canadiens could have a very strong 2009-10 campaign. In every individual case, of course, each item here is in some way crucial to the team's success moving forward. In summer, when hope springs eternal for all teams, here's the optimistic upside we'd all love to see happen.

10 - The team's new acquisitions gel quickly and take command of the team

Six off season free agent acquisitions reflects a massive overhaul the likes of which the Canadiens have never dealt with before. Add in Scott Gomez via the major trade route, and the influx of fresh blood is something akin to the "Twilight" series. Blowing up the blueprint has never been the Habs modus operandi, and with unchartered waters comes inevitable apprehension and fear. Nonetheless, Gomez, Mike Cammalleri, Brian Gionta, Jaroslav Spacek, Hal Gill, Travis Moen and Paul Mara are all well established talents whose reputations precede them. By design, they now represent one third of the Canadiens hockey club, and the risks inherent in such a drastic shift involve chemistry and a multitude of other variables. No one's kidding anyone by stating this group of seven will be under the hottest of spotlights, and expectations being what they are, some would say it foolish that all seven together will match or surpass previous heights. One bottom line appraisal for this refreshening of the club, is that it will band the new group together as one, while bringing the older guard together in a separate supporting faction. Both will want the other to succeed, as motivation and support wear off positively. Wins will unify, and if the new Habs do their thing, an "all for one and one for all" attitude will quickly set in. Wins will also remove a certain pressure from either faction, and if such should, the gelling in the team sense should help all members settle in and settle down in short order.

9 - Andrei Markov remains his same old self

Markov is the Habs hub. He is without question the gear that moves the Canadiens wheels. The Canadiens season ended without him, and it was nightmarish and grim. With a solid club surrounding him, there could be a Norris Trophy in Markov's future, and all he needs to do is continue to be what he always has been. Much of his contribution to the team will depend on the power play unit the Canadiens assemble. New additions will provide all kinds of alluring options for Markov, and hopefully those additions will quickly sense that he is the general. In a sea of change, Markov remains the constant.

8 - The second tier supports the first

One nagging issue concerning last season's club involved the dropoff in productivity and commitment from many elements that were expected to both lead and support. Several of the major players who gave consistent efforts have departed, while all but two of last season's underachievers remain. While the club acquired several top line assets, contribution from the support staff will still be of prime importance. Plekanec will need to step up, as do Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn. Roman Hamrlik needs to be more consistant and reliable. Maxim Lapierre and buddy Guillaume Latendresse should continue to progress and contribute. From these, it's all about pushing. Jaroslav Halak has to make life difficult for Carey Price with every start. Travis Moen will have to show Georges Laraque that there is little courtesy involved in dirty work. Hal Gill can mentor Ryan O'Byrne on the intricacies of the big man's game. The contribution of the supporting cast will enable a safety net of sorts for when the players with starring roles spit and sputter - which will undoubtably happen on occasion. This was sore spot last season - a gaping open wound. With a year's learning and experience under their belts, it should not happen a second year running.

7 - Carey Price rebounds to his 2007-08 form

Price has worn many tags in two short seasons, from franchise and saviour in promise, to thouroughbred in his defence. His lower points have been excruciatingly documented, and he has not always handled the rough going well. While he may not have lived up to early lofty expectations, he maintains all the tools to see him through. The system coach Martin will seek to build is one that should fortify Price's strengths. Should a more responsible team effort solidify what Price brings, a return to form is highly likely. If this is the case early on, expect Price to finally fulfill his weighty buildup. And that can only be a good thing. A great season for Price would equal a great year for the Habs.

6 - The Kostitsyn's steer clear from all controversy

The brothers K could not have a more miserable season, could they? Both bros are extremely talented kids with tons of upside. If the fates cut them some slack, perhaps everyone will get to appreciate all they can bring once more. Confidence for Andrei and maturity for Sergei are keys, and what they could unlock together would be a thing of beauty. It might be wise to pencil them both alongside Plekanec, as familiarity for all three wouldn't hurt their cause. Keeping in mind that young talent sometimes staggers after unexpected leaps forward, the grounding in reality that last season represented, can only help bring out a defined determination in the brothers.

5 - Jacques Martin imposes a structured two way system

Like his style or not, all Jacques Martin coached teams have had strongly defined defensive identities. In hoping to make the club one that is hard to play against, expect the Canadiens to be somewhat boring at times, especially on the road, in order to achieve this. Another trait of Martin coached teams, is how quickly they are able to turn opponent's error into goals. Martin likes his players in constant movement, especially when speed is used to grind other team's gears to a standstill. Martin has been given a lineup flexible enough to achieve his ideals, but his teachings will only be appreciated if the offensive side of it capitalizes.

4 - The kids on the farm bloom

With many of the current Canadiens on one year contracts, a watchful eye will be kept on the Bulldogs. Players such as Ben Maxwell, Yannick Weber, P.K. Subban and Max Pacioretty would do themselves good to have near dominant seasons and also help out big time with the team's transition one year from now. Much of what they achieve, will determine the direction the team takes in the immediate future. In the meantime, their progress lends awareness to those whose jobs may be on the line.

3 - A lot less injuries would be sweet

With all the new elements on the club, the one thing that could really mess up plans would be a number of injuries to key componants right out of the gate. There is an abundance of talent in the lineup, but with so much of it unfamiliar to itself, it would catastrophic if this team is still looking for itself, and intangibles such as identity, cohesion, and chemistry by mid season.

2 - Tomas Plekanec finds his balls

When Plekanec is confident, he can play with the poise of intuitive and instinctive vet. Any player can have an off year, and Plekanec was brutal in long stretches last season. He also went on one wicked tear in mid season, proving that ability certainly was not lost. The key for him is to play without the fear of mistakes, and bounce right back after committing one. A coach such as Martin should help a player such a Plekanec get the best out of himself.

1 - Scott Gomez produces a 75 point season.

As the deal that triggered the Canadiens wholesale changes, all eyes will be on Gomez with expectations to produce strong numbers. Due to his inflated salary, he will come under heavy scrutiny by fans and media. Should he produce at close to a point per game clip, it will go a long way towards removing much of the pressure that will be on him. A productive campaign will also translate into success for his wingmates, which is also a crucial point. Were Gomez to have a sub par season, it would likely drag down members of his line, and create a constant shuffling of trios.

Did the Canadiens Mess Up by Not Drafting Maxime Talbot in 2002?

When it comes to the inexact science that is the drafting of 17 and 18 year old players into the NHL, it is often said that hindsight in 20/20. I'll add that such hindsight is often downright cockeyed, especially in terms of making a point years after players selected have matured.

In regards to where the Montreal Canadiens are concerned, it has often been stated, mostly by local media who have gotten their facts askew, that the Habs virtually ignore Quebec born talent.

Like many other mistruths, the fact begins to follow those who bark loudest. It's the old adage of the most recent historian having the last word.

What is really comes down to, is fibs selling better than facts.

Take the Pittsburgh Penguins forward Maxime Talbot for instance.

Talbot, the game seven hero of the 2009 Stanley Cup finals, would look to be a natural in Montreal Canadiens uniform. After two fairly good seasons with the Hull Olympics of the QMJHL, the Lemoyne, Quebec born forward was selected by Pittsburgh as the lights were being shut off that year, all the way into the eighth round, 234th overall.

In certain parts, it has been considered sacrilege that the Canadiens could miss this talent. Talbot plays with such obvious heart, it is a question that I myself asked during the Penguins final run.

It turns out I wasn't alone in thinking this, as Hall of Fame fournalist, Bertrand Raymond (Journal de Montreal, Rue Frontenac) also made it a point to single out Talbot recently, in an article preceding this summer's draft.

Raymond rarely wavers in his stance on the Canadiens drafting local players. He is unequivocal in stating the when the choice comes down to selecting between two players of equal talent, the Canadiens should without fault select the Quebec born prospect. Raymond states that a player performing in his own backyard will show more heart at the task, for obvious reasons. I've always agreed with that notion. The Canadiens as well, have often trotted the same mantra when applicable.

Now along comes Talbot and his front page heroics, and hindsight goes all cockeyed once more.

Raymond was writing on Louis Leblanc's chances of becoming a Hab three weeks ago, when he took the Canadiens and Trevor Timmins to task for missing out on Talbot. The journalist quoted former coach Michel Bergeron, who's often said of Timmins, that he "can spot a Russian player behind a snowbank in Siberia, but he'll miss a Quebec born talent on the street before him."

Alluding, and not without fault, that perhaps Talbot had yet to show his full bloom by 2002, Raymond then notes that Talbot should have been held in higher consideration by the Canadiens at the time.

"Peut-être qu'il n'annonçait pas encore ce qu'il allait devenir, mais une chose est certaine, parce qu'il est natif de Montréal, Talbot aurait dû avoir plus de valeur pour le Canadien que pour toute autre organisation de la Ligue nationale. Pourtant, on ne l'a pas considéré."

Fair enough. Raymond does state that 30 teams passed on Talbot for a full seven rounds before Pittsburgh fired a bullseye. It is a stretch to suggest the Canadiens did not have their eyes on Talbot. All that can be said is that they likely didn't have him rated as highly as Pittsburgh had come that round

Talbot played two more seasons in the Q, and was named league playoff MVP both years. Who knew, right?

Looking back, Raymond defends his stance in criticizing Timmins for missing the mark on Montreal drafting french players as such:

"Readers have given all kinds of interpretations to my comments regarding Timmins' lack of interest for francophones in the draft", says Raymond. That year, the Canadiens drafted five players ahead of Talbot, four of which would never wear a Canadiens sweater. Never. That is what I mean when I allude to a lack of awareness by Canadiens scouts over the years when the question concerns players of the Quebecois fibre."

"Des lecteurs ont donné toutes sortes d'interprétations au commentaire que j'ai fait sur le manque d'intérêt que Trevor Timmins semble avoir pour le fait francophone au repêchage. Cette année-là, le Canadien a repêché cinq joueurs avant que Talbot ne soit réclamé par Pittsburgh, dont quatre ne porteront jamais le chandail tricolore. Jamais. C'est ce que je veux dire quand je fais allusion au manque de sensibilisation des recruteurs du Canadien au fil des ans quand il était question de la fibre québécoise."

Now here's something to remember - memories can be awful selective at times. I'm not trying to play with words. It's the way brains work - mine, yours and everybody else's.

Of 291 prospects chosen in 2002, only 15 would come from the Quebec league. Chicoutimi's Pierre - Marc Bouchard went eighth overall to the Minnesota Wild and team mate Jeff Deslauriers - Drouin went first in the second round to the Edmonton Oilers. Most of the rest of the names are a collection of "never heard from again" players you'll have a tough time remembering who they were selected by.

The incomplete list reads: Maxime Daigneault, Michael Tessier, Dominic D' Amour, Rosairio Ruggeri, Daniel Manzato, J.F. Dufort, James Cuddihy, Marc - Andre Roy...

All told, of the 15 Quebec born players drafted, only 5 have to this point, played in an NHL game.

If Raymond had checked into the facts a little deeper, he would not have conveniently forgotten that two of those players drafted by the Canadiens he says would never dress for them or play an NHL game were actually QMJHL products - Michael Lambert and Jonathan Ferland. The latter actually did play in the NHL.

Lambert was a 6' 5'' , 220 lb left wing with the Montreal Rocket, who put up 29-24-53 numbers in 71 games in his draft eligible year. He added 111 penalty minutes, surely catching the Canadiens scout's eyes. The prospect would split his time in both the ECHL and the AHL during his contract years with the Canadiens. In three seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Lambert played in 126 games, putting up 24-16-40 totals. He plays in a Quebec industrial league these days.

The Habs did a little better with a later pick, the 212th, wherein they selected Ferland from the Acadie - Bathurst Titans. Ferland remained in the Canadiens organization until 2007-08, and although he seemed to progress annually, he never performed up to hoped for standards. He earned a seven game stint with Montreal in 2005-06, and scored his lone NHL goal that season. In five seasons with the Bulldogs, he scored another 57. It cannot be said that the Canadiens did not give this seventh round pick a fair shot.

Ferland posted 28-46-74 totals in 55 games with the Titans in his draft year. Twenty four picks later, from the same QMJHL, the Penguins took a chance on Talbot, who put up 24-36-60 numbers in 65 games.

Without hindsight, how does any truly know how players will pan out from the later rounds?

What bugs, is that Raymond should know better, when dropping these "so called" mistakes on Timmins' lap. For starters, Timmins wasn't the Canadiens directors of scouting in 2002, he was with the Ottawa Senators. Secondly, Timmins did not shy away from selecting Quebec league talent. Starting in 2003, Timmins and his scouts have regularly selected QMJHL players. Here's a look by year, round and rank:

All together, the Canadiens have drafted 55 players under Timmins' watch, 13 of which were QMJHL or francophone players - that's close to 24% of all players drafted by the team.

As draft choices generally take two to three seasons to reach the NHL, the players selected from 2007 to the most recent draft have yet to come under full evaluation. Judging how well or not Timmins has done, is best served by looking primarily at the 33 players chosen from 2003 to 2006.

During those five drafts, 10 of 33 players were QMJHLproducts or francophone choices, and they include Urquhart, Lapierre, Stewart, Bonneau, Lacasse, Dulac - Lemelin, Latendresse, Aubin, Paquet, and Carle. These picks represent 30% of the Canadiens selections during that time. Of the aforementioned, only Lapierre and Latendresse have become NHL players, which means the Canadiens have a 6% ratio of success when drafting locally.

Of the remaining 23 players chosen in those five drafts, 12 players have played at least one NHL game, representing a 54% success ratio when the Canadiens draft outside of Quebec.

(I am aware that this is a blanket surface assessment that does not give way for numerous mitigating circumstances involving players and where they were chosen, but the discrepancy in ratios still speaks largely for itself.)

Perhaps Timmins is aware of this, as only 3 (Fortier, Leblanc and Dumont) of the Canadiens 22 selections in the three most recent drafts are considered local product.

While Raymond and other journalists are stating loudly that the Canadiens aren't paying close enough attention to francophones in their backyard, perhaps the opposite is true.

Maybe Timmins is making less selections out of the Q because he is in fact paying greater attention, and not seeing much.

Get To Know The Canadiens Development Camp Prospects

With close to 40 Canadiens prospects at the Habs training facility in Brossard until June 12, I thought it would be useful to track down information on all participants and put it all in one place for reference.

This idea took root when I began looking at the list of invited players and noticed several players who were offered tryouts. In wanting to learn more about them, I started reading and collected some links. Before I realized what I was doing, I thought I might as well cover all 40 players, and make a post of it. Little did I know it would take the better part of the day!

In all, I looked up 38 players, leaving out known quantities Max Pacioretty and Yannick Weber, as they have essentially graduated to the big club. Of those 38, only Dany Masse will not be in Brossard, as he will be undergoing surgery some time this week.

Because there is so much to cover here, I divided the players up into categories starting with the seven players in camp on tryouts, followed by Hamilton Bulldogs and Cincinati Cyclone players (12) currently on their first professional contracts. The next section concerns prospects still in college or with a junior hockey affilaition (11) of which only two have signed pro contracts. The final group are the eight recently drafted players, all of whom will be attending the camp.
