(Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings conclude a five-game road trip tonight, when they play the Calgary Flames at Pengrowth Saddledome.

Detroit, the defending Western Conference champions, are off to just a 4-4-3 start to the season and are 1-1-2 on their current trek. However, the Red Wings should be happy they were able to come away with a point in Thursday's 6-5 shootout loss to Edmonton.

The Red Wings trailed the game 5-1 before getting a second-period goal from Henrik Zetterberg and a trio of third-period tallies by Jonathan Ericsson, Todd Bertuzzi and Patrick Eaves to force extra time.

"We said even after the first period we have to start slowly and creep back into this game," Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said. "Go one goal at a time, and just wait for our opportunities, not sway away from our game plan. I thought in the third period we played even better."

Jimmy Howard drew the start between the pipes on Thursday, but yielded five goals on 33 shots faced. That could mean that the struggling Chris Osgood could get the start tonight.

Osgood, who is 3-2-2 with a 3.40 goals-against average this year, is 22-14-0 with five ties and a 2.34 GAA in his career versus Calgary.

Thursday's loss proved more costly for the Red Wings than just a game in the standings, as forward Valtteri Filppula suffered a broken wrist and will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks.

The Flames had a three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday, thanks to a 3-2 loss to Colorado. Jarome Iginla and Olli Jokinen scored within the first 1:10 of the game, but the Avs rallied for two goals later in the first period and got the game-winner in the third.

Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside 11-of-14 shots for Calgary.

"We had a good start to the game, and then we backed off and allowed [the Avalanche] to carry the play," Calgary head coach Brent Sutter said. "We didn't really do enough to score here [Wednesday]. We had a lot of outside shots and [the Avalanche] blocked a lot of shots, give them credit."

Kiprusoff is 8-8-1 with a tie and a 2.98 GAA in his career versus Detroit.

These two clubs split four meetings a season ago, but the Red Wings have still won six of the last 10 matchups. The teams have also split the last four encounters that took place in Calgary.
