Recap: Carolina vs. St. Louis

Sports Network | October 28, 2009

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - David Perron finished with two goals and assist, as the St. Louis Blues took a 5-2 win over Carolina to send the Hurricanes to their seventh consecutive loss.

Yan Stastny, Jay McClement and Andy McDonald also scored for St. Louis, which has won three of five. Chris Mason made 34 saves in the victory.

"We were in pretty good position on some of those goals," Blues head coach Andy Murray said. "Created some turnovers and they worked out for us, there was good timing in our goals."

Joe Corvo and Scott Walker had power-play tallies for Carolina, which had not lost seven consecutive games since January 25-February 11, 2003. The Hurricanes' longest losing streak in franchise history is nine, during the 1982-83 season when the team was located in Hartford.

Cam Ward allowed four goals on 17 shots in the setback.

"The nice part is when you wake up in the morning, you know what the problems are," Carolina head coach Paul Maurice said. "The hard part is you don't know where to start. We have to respect the defensive part of the game. We are looking like we are flip-flopping back and forth, you know, one night we are good defensively and don't work hard offensively."

The Blues took control with the first three scores of the first period, beginning with Perron at 7:32, when he slapped a rebound past Ward.

Later in the frame, Stastny and McClement scored just 16 seconds apart to make it a 3-0 game. Stastny had an unassisted goal with 4:08 left, and moments later, McClement picked up a bouncing pass just across the blue line, skated in and put a shot over Ward.

Corvo put Carolina on the board with 53 seconds left in the period, but St. Louis got the goal back midway through the second.

McDonald received a cross-ice pass from Keith Tkachuk and put a backhander across the goal line at 9:42, making it a 4-1 contest.

The Hurricanes drew within two again at 8:12 of the final period on another power play. Mason couldn't control the high rebound on a shot from Walker, who knocked the puck out of the air into the net.

But Carolina got no closer, and Perron had an empty-net tally in the final minute to seal the win.

Hartford went nine games without a win from February 19-March 8, 1983 as the Whalers finished the year 19-54-7...The teams had scored five goals in their previous three meetings combined...Carolina has given up goals a minute or less apart in five games this season.
