Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mark Streit's shot 53 seconds into overtime sent the New York Islanders over Washington, 4-3, at Verizon Center.
Top rookie forward John Tavares controlled the puck along the right wing, and dipped behind the Capitals net while battling a Washington defender. He was able to get by a check around the opposite side of the cage and slipped a pass into the slot, where Streit one-timed it home.
Frans Nielsen scored twice and Kyle Okposo once for the Islanders, who have won two in a row after dropping seven of their previous eight overall.
Dwayne Roloson picked up the win with a 37-save effort.
Tomas Fleischmann lit the lamp twice and Alex Ovechkin also tallied for the Capitals, who saw their six-game win streak halted.
Jose Theodore allowed four goals on 30 shots in defeat.
Ovechkin opened the scoring 4:41 into the contest, when his slap shot from the point managed to slip between Roloson's pads for a power-play score. Okposo equalized for the visitors just after the midway point of the period, with a quick wrister.
Nielsen put the Isles ahead 7:12 into the second, stripping Caps defenseman Mike Green in the slot and lifting a shot over Theodore's glove, then Fleischmann evened the score 1:38 later on a wraparound.
The Caps forged ahead with the man advantage at 16:43, as Fleischmann fought his way into the crease to follow up the rebound of Green's initial shot, but Nielsen responded for a 3-3 tie only 67 seconds later.
