Red Wings Valued At $336 Million, Ranked 4th In NHL

According to prominent business magazine Forbes, the Detroit Red Wings are valued at $336 million, which ranks fourth in the NHL. The Toronto Maple Leafs top the list, checking in with a value of $521 million.

The Red Wings' value increased by seven percent over the last year. That ranks 12th in the league. The biggest movers on the list, in terms of increased value, were the Winnipeg Jets. The team formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers played its first season in its new city in 2011-12, and it resulted in a 21-percent jump in value.

Detroit brought in $165 million in revenue and had an operating income of $16.3 million, which ranked sixth in the league.

In addition to the Maple Leafs, the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens ranked ahead of the Red Wings on the list. New York and Montreal were valued at $507 million and $445 million, respectively.

The Phoenix Coyotes had the lowest value in the league, $134 million.

Bears Finish No. 2, Cubs Finish No. 4 In ESPN Uniform Rankings

For reasons beyond the comprehension of most sports fans, the Chicago Bears have been somewhat arbitrarily awarded the No. 2 spot overall and the Chicago Cubs have earned the No. 4 spot across all major sports (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB) for the best uniforms over at ESPN. Of the 122 teams across those four professional sports leagues, the Montreal Canadiens, Bears, St. Louis Cardinals, Cubs and Boston Bruins round out the franchises with the top-five uniforms overall. The New York Yankees barely cracked the top-10 and the Chicago Bulls didn't even make the top-50(!). Weird.

Throwback designs apparently did factor into the decision as well, but the Bears and Cubs don't exactly have the best options in that category so it seems the high marks are based on the iconic standards set by the usual threads. Here is the rationale attributed to the decision on the Bears at No. 2:

True, the helmet design is starting to look a tad dated. But the striped sleeves, striped socks (now a rarity in the NFL, alas), unique number font, and even the perma-memorial to Papa Bear all score major points, and the Bears may be the only team in the league who look as sharp on the road as they do at home. The cream of the NFL crop.

The White Sox took the No. 39 spot, the Chicago Blackhawks managed a No. 49 ranking and the Chicago Bulls (No. 67) laughably came in behind the Florida Panthers (No. 64), Tennessee Titans (No. 65) and Indiana Pacers (No. 61). Given the scope of the exercise, I will assume most fans disagree with most of the rankings.

ESPN Ranks Red Wings Uniform 15th In Pro Sports

Let the outrage begin.

With fall sports getting close, ESPN's Uni Watch ranked every jersey among the four major professional leagues and Detroit's top uniform was awarded to the Red Wings, who come in at No. 15 in all of pro sports.

Among NHL teams, the Red Wings were fourth, behind Montreal, Boston and the New York Rangers. The Canadiens were named the No. 1 jersey in pro sports.

As for the other Detroit teams, the Tigers were No. 14, the Pistons were No. 57 and the new Lions look was No. 108 out of 122. The iconic Old English D was No. 9 in baseball, behind teams such as the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Scott Gomez Wins His Own Grand Prize In Charity Golf Tournament

Montreal Canadiens center Scott Gomez hosted a charity golf tournament in Anchorage, Alaska on Thursday. The top prize was a $50,000 SUV. Gomez participated in his own charity event, of course. I'm sure you all know what's coming. Remember when Mr. Burns won that 1997 Pontiac Astro Wagon? Yeah, this was worse.

Brian Stubits of CBS Sports reports that Gomez sank a hole-in-one to claim the SUV. He didn't give it away or anything. He was just shocked and elated that he won his own car. I guess we all would be.

I just hope that Gomez drove the SUV away to the thunderous boos of the crowd.

Alex Galchenyuk's Just Like The Rest Of Us

Alex Galchenyuk was just taken with the No. 3 overall pick in the NHL Draft. His life has effectively been changed forever, and now he's a member of the most storied organization in hockey: the Montreal Canadiens. One would think he'd be a little busy, but nope. Just standing there in the hallway alone, watching NBC Sports Network like the rest of us.

Is Former Penguins Head Coach Michel Therrien A Coaching Candidate For The Canadiens?

The folks over at PensBlog did some digging and found a video of CBC's Hot Stove segment during an intermission of Saturday night's Kings-Devils game. One of the topics that came up was the head coaching vacancy in Montreal for the Canadians. One of the names (at about the 3:00 mark) was none other than former Penguins coach, Michel Therrien.

It would be an interesting move, to say the least, as Therrien has been out of the league since the Penguins fired him in the middle of the 2008-2009 season. He had the second longest tenure of any head coach in Penguins history. He has already had one go around with the Montreal Canadiens from 2000 to 2003 in which he led the team to one playoff appearance.

It would be interesting to see Therrien make a return to the league with his no-nonsense coaching style, and of course plenty of Therrien-isms in post-game press conferences.

Red Wings Assistant GM Jim Nill Draws Interest From Montreal Canadiens, But Is Staying Put For Now

The Detroit Red Wings almost lost one of their top front office guys to the Montreal Candiens, according to Ansar Khan of mlive.com. Jim Nill, the assistant general manager of the Red Wings, was considering taking the full general manager position with Montreal, before deciding that the move was not in his family's best interest. There's an illness in his family that is keeping Nill around.

Still, if those issues get resolved, the Red Wings could see the back of Nill at some point over the next season or two if he continues to get looks from other teams. He's been with the Red Wings for 18 years, 14 of which as the assistant general manager under Ken Holland. On top of that, he runs the amateur scouting department and oversees the selections at the entry draft.

Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch gave Nill permission to talk with the Canadiens organization, and it does sound like the talks went in a very positive direction in regards to Nill and his future. The story from mlive.com ends with a quote from Nill, who says his goal is to become a general manager, and that there will be opportunities for it down the road.

VIDEO: Devin Setoguchi Struggled In The Minnesota Wild Shootout

Devin Setoguchi was instrumental in helping the Minnesota Wild come back to force overtime against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. The right wing was also instrumental, however, in creating one of the most epic fail videos to come out of hockey in quite awhile.

Setoguchi scored a game-tying goal with just 10 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but he wasn't quite as clutch when all eyes were on him to score the game-tying goal in the shootout. He got the puck, skated toward the net, lost the puck and then hilariously fell down as he tried to turn around and retrieve his missing baggage.

It caused a loss so it obviously doesn't sound like something worth laughing at, but ... embedded video is below for the masochists in the crowd.

It isn't a highlight that Wild fans are going to want to remember, but hopefully some day we can look back on it and laugh.

VIDEO: Sorry Devin Setoguchi, The Price Is Wrong

There's a thin line between being the hero or goat in the NHL -- as thin as an ice skate blade. And sometimes ice skate blades catch a groove in the ice and send a guy tumbling. After Thursday's shootout between the Canadiens and Wild, Devin Setoguchi knows this. Chuckle at his misfortune below the jump.

Wait, wait, something's missing. Let's try that again:

Bingo.

(To be completely fair, it's impossible to pin this loss completely on Setoguchi. The Canadiens blew a 4-1 lead in the final five minutes of regulation, with Setoguchi capping off Minnesota's comeback by scoring his 16th goal of the season with just 9.8 seconds left on the clock. It's just too bad he followed that with an automatic submission to the NHL's all-time blooper reel.)
