Super Bowl betting sees late money on Denver, point spread moves slightly

The Super Bowl point spread inched a half point higher in late betting as Denver was -2.5. A predicted surge of late Seattle money was still possible as Vegas pros and anxious recreational bettors got their money down Sunday.

With just hours to go to kickoff and a surge of Denver money early Sunday, the Super Bowl point spread appeared set at -2.5 and the total was expected to stay near 47.5.

Only one major sportsbook had Denver as a 3-point favorite, making the Bovada line the best value for Seattle bettors for Super Bowl XLVIII.

The rest of the books monitored by, including DSI which the site began tracking just last week, were at -2.5. A few overseas books that typically boast a smaller percentage of North American-focused bettors, had Denver at -1.5.

At Bovada, the ideal outcome for the book would be a one-point Broncos victory.

"Not to be greedy, but a nice little 28-27 result would be optimal," said Kevin Bradley of, who was seeing a consistent 57 percent of betting handle on the Broncos.

Known as a recreational book that typically cheers for ‘UNDER' bets, they are cheering for lots of points tonight.

"Amazingly, we need the OVER."

The Broncos spent most of the last two weeks as a 2-point favorite.

[ Reasons why Denver will cover | Reasons why Seattle win cover ]

Part of the reason for the late money coming in on Denver could be the weather conditions. After all of the hype and concern surrounding a potentially snowy Super Bowl, weather reports indicate a game-time temperature in the high 30s to low 40s with fairly mild winds of around 10 mph.

With only a 10 percent chance of precipitation and daytime highs reaching the high 40s or low 50s, Sunday is looking like a great day for a football game. At Bovada, the expectation of late OVER money had not materialized as of mid-morning.

Despite the fair weather and money coming in on the Broncos, bettors do not necessarily think this will be a high-scoring game. After jumping up from 47 to 48.5 earlier this week, late money has come in on the UNDER to move the line back down to 47.5.

With Denver's defense playing well this postseason and the Seahawks' defense playing great all year, the UNDER is clearly a popular pick amongst bettors.

Suffering no setbacks over the last two weeks, injury-plagued wide receiver Percy Harvin will play for the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Harvin was brought in by the Seahawks this offseason to be a deep threat and help spread out the defense, and he should be able to do just that if he can stay on the field.

The clear and snow-free day will provide these two teams the chance to play in a Super Bowl in which weather should not be a factor. Late money coming in on Denver and the UNDER follows the betting trends that have been popular since the big game was set two weeks ago.

The weather also has moved the dial on some Super Bowl prop bets that were weather-related. Among the silly ones, the chance of a Red Hot Chili Pepper band member going shirtless at the halftime show improved with warmer temperatures.
