2012 NFL Draft Results: Full List Of Round 2 Picks

The 2nd round of the 2012 NFL Draft was full of surprises as draft boards were shattered with unexpected picks. Wide receivers bookended the top and bottom selections in the 2nd round, starting with St. Louis' choice of Brian Quick and ending with the New York Giants drafting Rueben Randle from LSU.

Players like Jonathan Martin, Stephen Hill and Janoris Jenkins were pegged as likely 1st-round picks by many experts, but fell into the 2nd round.

2012 NFL Draft Results: 2nd Round's Best And Worst Picks

The 2nd round of the 2012 NFL Draft was a relatively quaint affair after a wild opening night. Teams traded a total of 10 times in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, but the buzz word for Round 2 was value. Players projected to go in the 1st round always slip as amateur and professional hobbyist draft boards meet with reality. Still, the sight of players like Cordy Glenn and Jonathan Martin being picked in the 2nd round was a little shocking.

Best Pick: Coby Fleener, TE, Colts -- I really like this pick, and Andrew Luck will too. He told us as much on Wednesday night, at the NFLPA rookie event, but the Stanford quarterback was not holding his breath, waiting for Fleener to fall. But fall he did, and with the addition of Dennis Allen, the rookie quarterback should have a couple solid targets to work with on day one.

Worst Pick: LaMichael James, RB, San Francisco -- Clearly Frank Gore is not going to be around forever, and the 49ers drafted a very good Kendall Hunter last year to account for that. I get the James pick from a depth, complementary perspective. Still, if they wanted speed, why not opt for Lamar Miller?

Most Surprising Pick: Ryan Broyles, WR, Detroit -- Broyles was on the radar late after showing progress from injuries that took him off it in his last year at Oklahoma. Most had him pegged as a 3rd round flyer pick, but Detroit gambled. He could be a very nice option in the slot for Matthew Stafford.

The Pick Other Teams Will Regret: Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Baltimore -- Once again, Ozzie Newsome has fleeced the rest of the league, stealing a talented player who should have gone in the 1st round. Coaches are too slavishly devoted to scheme fits -- as those schemes are an extension of their ego -- and Upshaw scared them away by his lack of simple definition.

Rich Get Richer Pick: Rueben Randle, WR, New York Giants -- I really thought Randle would be one of the first players off the board on Friday. Seeing him fall to the last pick of the 2nd round might have been the biggest shock of the whole day. With Eli Manning throwing him the ball, he could be a beast. The big man will be an asset as the Giants division rivals loaded up on corners this offseason.

'Who Is This Guy?' Pick: Derek Wolfe, DT, Denver - Denver had an obvious need at defensive tackle, but I would have assumed Jerel Worthy or Kendal Reyes was going to be the pick. Wolfe was a Kiper favorite in recent days.

NFL Draft Grades: Rams, Ravens Continue Making Smart Moves

We are now three rounds down in the 2012 NFL Draft. The 1st round came and went on Thursday night and two more rounds were completed on Friday night. Rounds 4-7 come on Saturday afternoon.

At about the halfway point of the NFL Draft, it's time for another set of grades. Here's a recap of the picks in Round 1, Round 2 and Round 3.

The grades at the midway point....

A - Top Of The Class

Redskins: Getting Robert Griffin III changes everything. If the gamble works out, as I think it will, it's easily worth the risk.

Cowboys: Adding Morris Claiborne is huge, and it came at a reasonable price.

Packers: A little pre-emptive love for this draft, even though there may not be any stars here. I think the Packers have three starters with the first three picks, and they're all solid values. Starting with Nick Perry, Jerel Worthy in the 2nd round and Casey Hayward, who some had late 1st round buzz, in the 3rd round.

Buccaneers: I'm starting to love this draft. Mark Barron in the 1st round, and Doug Martin at the end of Round 1. Both potential starters and areas of need. Then Lavonte David in the 2nd round, who is also at a position of need. Great picks.

Rams: Huge fan of this one, too. Michael Brockers is a future starter. Brian Quick has the physical tools to be very good with Sam Bradford. Add in Janoris Jenkins (boom-or-bust), Isaiah Pead (solid running back value) and Trumaine Johnson (All-American). That's some serious talent.

Bengals: Quantity is the word here. Five total picks in the first 93 picks -- Dre Kirkpatrick, Kevin Zeitler, Devon Still, Mohamed Sanu and Brandon Thompson. All are impact players, some as soon as this year.

Giants: Adding Rueben Randle at the end of Round 2 was a steal. His talent level is much better than that. David Wilson is a nice pick, too. GM Jerry Reese gets the benefit of the doubt that this will work out.

Ravens: They deserve an A. Courtney Upshaw is the next great Ravens linebacker, and Kelechi Osemele allows them to avoid the next Ben Grubbs leaving. Bernard Pierce is a nice pick-up.

B - A.J. Smith 'Good But Not Elite' Class

Eagles: Not a bad mix on defense. Fletcher Cox helps on the inside, Mychal Kendricks is a solid value in Round 2 and Vinny Curry adds to the pass rush. Nick Foles is a nice developmental project. Good draft.

Bears: Shea McClellin was a bit of a reach. Alshon Jeffery was not. Nice value in Round 2 on Jeffery, a boom-or-bust player.

Lions: Riley Reiff is a starting quality offensive tackle. Ryan Broyles could need some time to get ready after his injury.

Vikings: Matt Kalil is a sure thing. Trading back into the 1st round for Harrison Smith wasn't a great move. Josh Robinson might be more talented than him.

Panthers: I really like this class so far -- Luke Kuechly and Amini Silatolu, who had 1st round buzz. Both are starters, possibly as soon as this year. Tempted to put them at an A.

Bills: Stephon Gilmore and Cordy Glenn are both potential starters, if not immediate starters.

Dolphins: Not a bad draft when you pick up your future quarterback (Ryan Tannehill), offensive tackle (Jonathan Martin) and tight end (Michael Egnew).

Patriots: I like the trade-ups in Round 1, and Bill Belichick followed that up with two more defensive players -- Tavon Wilson and Jake Bequette.

Jets: Quinton Coples is a bit of a head-scratcher but not a bad pick. Stephen Hill is good value at 43. I thought he would be gone in the 1st round.

Browns: Slowly, it's coming together. Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden and Mitchell Schwartz could all start this year.

Steelers: David DeCastro is a sure thing in Round 1. Mike Adams is terrific value in Round 2. Sean Spence will fit in with the great Steelers linebackers.

Colts: Andrew Luck is a no-brainer. But two tight ends with their next two picks? With all the needs, two tight ends? Maybe they're the next Gronk and Hernandez but I don't see the strategy here.

Titans: Kendall Wright, Zach Brown and Mike Martin. No beef with any of those picks. All solid, in the right range.

Chargers: Melvin Ingram is a stud. Kendall Reyes fills a need as does Brandon Taylor.

Broncos: 36 seemed a little high for Derek Wolfe. Like the Brock Osweiler pick, considering Manning is 36 years old. Ronnie Hillman will fit into the running back rotation.

Chiefs: Boom-or-bust on Dontari Poe, but that's a big boom. Jeff Allen is a future starter at guard. Donald Stephenson is the swing tackle. This is about depth.

C - Picks With Equal Potential And Question Marks

Falcons: Peter Konz is a great pick in the 2nd round. Lamar Holmes adds to the offensive line depth. But that's it. The cost of doing business when you move up nearly two dozen spots, as the Falcons did last year.

Cardinals: Michael Floyd and Jamell Fleming through two picks. Floyd is the biggest impact.

Seahawks: I had Seattle at a D following Round 1. They move up a little here. Bruce Irvin still seems like a stretch in Round 1, but Bobby Wagner, linebacker out of Utah State, was taken at the right spot. Russell Wilson is also worth the risk in the 3rd round. Teams are desperate for quarterbacks.

49ers: A.J. Jenkins is a decent pick but 61 seemed a little high for LaMichael James. Who is he supposed to beat out? I'm just not sure I see the need here. I suppose teams in the NFC Championship game can take luxury picks.

Texans: Whitney Mercilus has some boom-or-bust question marks. No 2nd round pick. Brandon Brooks was a rising offensive lineman, who didn't attend the Combine.

D - This Is A Stretch

Jaguars: The only reason the Jags are going here is the 3rd round pick on the punter. The punter!

F - Al Davis Legacy Award

Saints: Akiem Hicks in Round 3. That's it. Gotta fail the Saints.

Raiders: Tony Bergstrom. "I was the Raiders 1st draft pick ... 95th overall."

2012 NFL Draft Results: LSU WR Rueben Randle Selected By The New York Giants With The 63rd Pick

With the 63rd pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the New York Giants selected LSU Tigers wide receiver Rueben Randle. Randle is the 55th rated prospect in the draft and the sixth-rated wide receiver, according to Mocking The Draft's rankings.

Randle started two years at LSU and also saw significant playing time during his freshman year. He posted career highs of 53 receptions, 917 yards, 17.3 yards per reception and eight touchdowns in 2011. Randle's measurables are excellent, but his lack of production relative to other receivers in the class kept him from projecting as a first-round pick before the draft. He did improve in each year, however, and played on a two-quarterback team with two quarterbacks who were not particularly great passers. Randle checks in at 6'4" and 208 pounds, so he fits the ideal body type for a wide receiver.

Many expected Randle to be drafted much higher than this. The Giants get a dynamic playmaker who could thrive with Eli Manning throwing him the ball. New York selected running back David Wilson in the first round.

2012 NFL Draft Results: Vanderbilt CB Casey Hayward Selected By Green Bay Packers With 62nd Pick

With the 62nd overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Vanderbilt Commodores cornerback Casey Hayward in Round 2. Hayward checks in as the No. 16 cornerback, according to Mocking the Draft.

The Packers picked up Nick Perry with their only pick in the first round. In the second, Green Bay grabbed Jerel Worthy before picking Hayward.

Mocking the Draft has taken a look at Hayward's strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths: Hayward is an instinctive cornerback who is light on his feet and does well in zone situations. He sits on routes and makes most of his plays. Closes on the ball nicely. Ball skills are good. Hayward times his jumps well and has good body control to break up the pass.

Weaknesses: A work in progress in man coverage. Often needs help over the top and doesn't have especially good speed. Needs to stay more compact and not give up position working up the sideline.

2012 NFL Draft Results: Oregon RB LaMichael James Selected By The San Francisco 49ers With The 61st Pick

Former Oregon Ducks running back LaMichael James was selected in the second round on Day Two by the San Francisco 49ers. James becomes the No. 61 overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft. James is the 92nd-rated prospect in the draft and the eighth-ranked running back, according to Mocking The Draft's rankings.

Here's what Mocking The Draft had to say about James before the draft.

Final word: James has good athleticism and competes on every snap. He was perhaps the most dangerous open field running back in college football at attacking the perimeter while at Oregon. James was very consistent with his production, in three years he totaled 4,923 yards rushing and scored 52 rushing touchdowns. He is aggressive when attacking the outside and cutback lanes. Overall, I feel in time James will have an impact on a NFL team such as ex-Eagles running back Brian Westbrook with their comparable styles.

James joins a crowded backfield with Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter, a second-year player. He is the second offensive player selected by the 49ers in this draft, following their first-round selection of A.J. Jenkins, a wide receiver from Illinois.

Packers-Patriots Trade: Green Bay Makes Another Move

The Green Bay Packers aren't known as a team that does a lot of trading on draft day but already they've moved up twice in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Packers traded up with the New England Patriots for the 62nd pick in the NFL Draft.

The Packers plan to take Vanderbilt CB Casey Hayward with the 62nd pick.

They also traded up eight spots in the 2nd round to select Michigan State DT Jerel Worthy.

The Patriots traded their 2nd round pick for the Packers 3rd and 5th round picks, which are the 90th and 163rd picks in the draft.

This is the third Patriots trade of the draft after they moved up twice in the 1st round to grab DE/LB Chandler Jones and LB Dont'a Hightower.

2012 NFL Draft Results: Iowa State G Kelechi Osemele Selected By The Baltimore Ravens With The 60th Pick

With the 60th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens selected Iowa State Cyclones offensive tackle/guard Kelechi Osemele. Osemele entered the draft as the No. 40 overall prospect on the board and the third-ranked guard, according to Mocking the Draft's rankings.

Osemele was a four-year starter at Iowa State, where he was asked to play multiple positions during his college career. He was named first-team All-Big 12 in his senior season. He's a huge lineman at 6-foot-5 and 333 pounds, and he could play either tackle or guard in the NFL. He has experience at both positions and has been projected by most as a guard in the pros, but could play right tackle as well.

The Ravens traded out of the first round and used the 35th pick in the second round to select Alabama defensive end Courtney Upshaw. Osemele helps fill the void left by Ben Grubbs' departure in free agency.
