2012 Western & Southern Open Women's Final: Li Na Defeats Angelique Kerber In Three Sets

Although she played less than stellar in the first set of the Women's Final of the 2012 Western & Southern Open Women's Final, Li Na rebounded to dominate the final two sets of the match and win the tournament, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Angelique Kerber.

Kerber cruised through the first set, winning two break points and dominating Na. That would change in the second and third sets, as Na made fewer errors and forced Kerber to make tough shots.

This is the sixth career WTA title for Na, and her first since joining up with her new coach, Carlos Rodriguez. Her prize money for the win is $496,000, out of the tournament's $5.6 million total purse.

The 2012 Western & Southern Open featured another great day of tennis on Friday. We are getting into the later rounds of the tournament and many of the world's best players remain in the hunt for a title.

On the men's side of things, No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic defeated No. 12 Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals. Djokovic took the match in two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-2. The other quarterfinals match was between six-seed Juan Martin Del Potro and unranked Jeremy Chardy, with Del Potro winning both sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Roger Federer swept his match with Mardy Fish to advance to the semifinals.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams both played their quarterfinal matches on Friday. Venus was able to pull the upset over No. 3 seed Samantha Stosur, winning in three sets by scores of 6-2, 6-7 and 6-4. Serena, who is coming off a gold medal victory at the Olympics, did not look sharp and lost to five-seed Angelique Kerber (4-6, 4-6).

2012 Western & Southern Open Daily Match Preview: Roger Federer, Serena Williams Look To Move On In Cincinnati

The Western & Southern Open continues on Friday with another full slate of matches on four separate courts. No. 1 seed Roger Federer will be in action again, taking on American Mardy Fish, who defeated Radek Stepanek in straight sets on Thursday. Fish has had a tumultuous summer, missing a lengthy stretch after experiencing an irregular heartbeat in Miami this spring.

Fish returned at Wimbledon and made some noise before bowing out in the fourth round. An ankle injury hobbled him after Wimbledon, but his form does seem to be returning as the season's final Slam approaches. Facing Federer, however, will be a tall task for one of the best American players on the ATP. They will play in the first match of the evening session on Center Court. Also on the men's side, No. 2 ranked Novak Djokovic will highlight the Center Court action in the afternoon when he faces Marin Cilic.

Following Djokovic on Center Court will be Serena Williams, who continues to bulldoze the competition this summer. After an early exit at Roland Garros, Williams responded with a win at Wimbledon and then absolutely breezed through the competition in the Olympics. She'll face German Angelique Kerber while No. 1 seed Aga Radwanska will playing in the evening and get the winner of the morning match between Li Na and Johanna Larsson.

The complete men's scoreboard can be found here, with the women's scoreboard here. You can also find somewhat of a schedule here -- times aren't listed anywhere, but play begins at 11 a.m. ET for the men and 11:30 a.m. ET for the women.

2012 Western & Southern Open: Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych Upset

Fresh off a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics, Andy Murray was looking to get his hard court schedule started with a bang at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

That hope vanished quickly Thursday as the third-seeded Murray was upset by France's Jeremy Chardy, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16 to see some of the air go out of his newly reinvigorated confidence.

Fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych saw a similar fate, dropping a three-set struggle to unseeded Milos Raonic of Canada, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

The hard court tournament wasn't only upsets Thursday, as favorites Rodger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish all advanced to the quarterfinals.

On the women's side, 2012 double gold medalist Serena Williams easily advanced to the quarterfinals, besting Poland's Urszula Radwanska 6-4, 6-3. Her sister Venus had a similarly uneventful round of 16, topping Sara Errani 6-3, 6-0.

Federer and the Williams sisters will be in action again on Friday.
