Last week's Serie A matches made the race for the European positions much more interesting. The top five have a fairly easy week in Round 15, but the race to the bottom could become more of a freefall.
The week seems to have just ended in Serie A, yet here we are again, ready to start Round 15. But what a shakeup we had last week! Although the scudetto race may not have been blown wide open, precisely, things certainly got a lot more interesting.
Juventus recorded their second loss of the season, to Milan, who have now moved into ninth and seem to have taken a few delusions of grandeur with them. Juve remain top, of course, but Napoli, who beat Cagliari, are just two points behind. It's now Fiorentina who are in third, thanks more to Inter's loss at Parma than the Viola's draw with Torino. A win would've put Fiorentina even with Napoli rather than the nerazzurri. Lazio have the last of the European spots, but after a resounding win over Udinese, they can't be excluded from any race.
It remains tight down at the bottom as well. Siena, Bologna, and Pescara are all sitting last, with 11 points, but Genoa and Chievo are barely safe, both on 12. And despite Palermo finally winning a game -- and against their rivals, even! -- the rosanero aren't secure either, just three points out of the relegation zone.
As for the matches this week, we've got a few tasty ones. Catania, who need to bounce back from their humiliation in the Sicilian Derby, have an impressive record at home. They'll be hosting Milan, who want to build on their impressive victory against Juve last week. As for the Old Lady, they'll be hosting the first Derby della Mole in nearly four years. Considering Torino's impressive performance against the Viola, could we be in for another upset?
On Sunday, there's nothing terribly exciting happening. The rest of the top five have opponents that should be easily dispensed with, so look for them to find interesting ways of giving their supporters heart palpitations. There's a relegation six-pointer between Genoa and Chievo that should be absolutely dire, so don't go seeking that out unless you are out of your sleep meds.
