Catania v Milan, Preview: Rossoneri look to build on last week's victory

Claudio Villa

Last week's win over Juventus means very little if Milan can't carry the momentum forward. But Catania are looking to recover from last week's derby shame, and could be formidable opponents.

Did last week's meltdown in the derby, resulting in a 3-1 win for Palermo, signify a larger problem for Catania? After all, if you can't find inspiration in thrashing your hated rivals, there just may be no hope for you. The elefanti looked out of sorts, lacking in inspiration and failing to finish their chances. Oh, and the defense was just awful.

Absent a significant change in their approach to the game, about the only thing Catania have going for them is their decent home record: the only team to win at the Massimino this season has been Juventus. Of course, now that Milan have defeated the table-toppers, they've got to like their chances in Sicily on Friday.

Sure, the dubious penalty, given for a supposed handball by Mauricio Isla, got the majority of the attention. But it wasn't just that Milan managed to win through Robinho's conversion. It was that they essentially shut down the Old Lady, giving them very little opportunity to create chances. And when Juve finally got themselves back into the match, the rossoneri defense was up to stopping their shots.

Catania Injuries and Suspensions

Mariano Izco (injured); Marco Biagianti (in doubt); Alejandro Gomez and Nicolas Spolli (suspended)

Good job, Catania. Go and get two of your most significant players suspended before hosting Milan. Oh...wait. That's right. You're in a better position without Spolli than with him, judging by his performance against Palermo.

AC Milan Injuries and Suspensions

Ignazio Abate and Daniele Bonera (injured); Mario Yepes (suspended)

Philippe Mexès is back from injury, so expect him to start alongside Francesco Acerbi in Yepes' absence. Mattia De Sciglio will continue at right back, which is infinitely more interesting than Abate anyway.

Match Date / Time: Friday, November 30 at 8:45 p.m. local, 2:45 p.m. ET

Venue: Stadio Angelo Massimino, Catania

TV: Sky Calcio 1, BeIN Sport, BeIn Sport en Español, RAI Internazionale
