After Sampdoria lost to Fiorentina last time out -- the side's third straight loss -- Delio Rossi found himself kicked to the curb. But, oddly for Italian football, there was no coach waiting in the wings to step up and right the ship. Two names kept popping up, however: Zdenek Zeman and Siniša Mihajlović.
Mihajlović was always the more reliable option. Zeman, with his free flowing attack and desire to throw defense out the window, really needs a preseason in order to be effective. Miha, meanwhile, is the conservative sort. He's the one you bring in to stop other sides from scoring and haul the team up, point by belabored point, from the relegation.
With 'Doria floundering down in 18th, it's easy to see why they chose Mihajlović. He'll most likely be able to keep them afloat. But he'll also likely start feuds with the players, unsuccessfully tinker with lineups and never pull off an away win. So thanks so much, Sampdoria, for bringing this man back to Serie A.
