Just a couple weeks after sending a very polite note telling Guangzhou Evergrande to keep their hands off Alessandro Diamante, Bologna have announced that the midfielder is off to China, whose transfer window doesn't close until the end of February. After Bologna rejected Guangzhou's first offer, Diamanti himself applied pressure, with reports suggesting he wants to join Marcello Lippi at the club.
That, or Diamanti just wants out of Bologna. The rossoblu are currently just a point above the relegation zone, hanging on only by squeezing out draws as they fight to stay alive. It's not a fun battle. It's not pretty to watch. And it really must be a drag to play out those games.
Bologna's decision to sell is a bit of a mystery, as it's not like they can use the €9m to bring in a player able to rescue the club. Diamanti has the most goals for the rossoblu, and though his five scored may not seem like many, when you realize it's 25 percent of the squad's total then you get more of a sense of just how much Bologna are struggling.
But Diamanti, who's been with Bologna since 2011, wanted out. Perhaps he sees Guangzhou as a new challenge, perhaps he feels it will help him earn a spot at the 2014 World Cup. Either way, he's gone, and Bologna now have an even steeper hill to climb.
