Freddie Ljungberg Signs With Celtic, Could Play Against Rangers

Freddie Ljungberg could be wearing hoops as soon as Saturday as Celtic prepares to play Scottish rival Rangers. The Swedish midfielder has signed a contract with Celtic after passing his physical on Thursday and will officially be unveiled during a Friday press conference.

This ends a somewhat roller-coaster two-year run in MLS. Ljungberg joined the league with much fanfare, as the Seattle Sounders made him one of their first signings prior to their inaugural 2009 season. He played well that first year, despite battling some injuries, and helped lead the Sounders to a U.S. Open Cup championship and a playoff appearance.

His second year in MLS did not go as smoothly. He clashed with teammates and coaches as the Sounders struggled during the first half of the season, and was eventually asked to train separately from the team before being traded to the Chicago Fire. He ended up registering just three assists in 15 games with the Sounders in 2010.

While Ljungberg put up better numbers in Chicago (two goals and seven assists in 1,200 minutes), he was unable to lead the Fire to the playoffs. Chicago claimed just 18 points in his 15 matches with the team and was left exposed in the Expansion Draft.

Now that Ljungberg has signed with Celtic, the trade between the Sounders and Fire is complete. The Sounders will receive the Fire's second round pick (27th overall) in the Jan. 13 SuperDraft.
