New York Cosmos Hire Eric Cantona As Director Of Soccer

Stay connected with SB Nation

There are still no players, no stadium plans or even a league to play in, but the New York Cosmos keep hiring people to run their theoretical team. The latest person to join the world-famous franchise is Eric Cantona, who is best known as a legendary player for Manchester United, but who more recently has been the manager of the French beach soccer team. Cantona joins Cobi Jones, who was hired about a week ago, in the Cosmos front office.

"I am very honoured to join the legendary New York Cosmos," Cantona told the Sun. "It's a big project, a wonderful project. The Cosmos are very strong, beautifully made, with a great past. It's kind of a mix between football and art."

In the Sun article, Cosmos chairman Paul Kelmsley is also quoted confirming the hire. It is also passingly mentioned that the team is planning to return to the field in two years, which would put them on track for a long-speculated 2013 debut in MLS.
